Maseru

Maseru is a one-night stop before the mountains: change money, buy a SIM, see the Basotho Hat and the cathedral in a morning, and give Thaba Bosiu a half-day by car — then leave early, because the border posts and the mountain roads both close with daylight.

Maseru is a small, low-rise capital on the border with South Africa. Its sights are close together and few; the trips that go wrong are late-afternoon border crossings, mountain drives that run into the dark, and arrivals that assume a scheduled flight. Four short clusters cover a first visit, and a taxi or hired car joins them.

Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU)
MSU to Maseru: one pre-booked car or taxi, about 25–50 minutes, and no timetable to rely on — the risk is that scheduled flights are few or none, and that a late landing finds no taxi at the airport.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster by day; private taxi or a hired car between clusters and out to Thaba Bosiu.

Passes
No pass. Minibus taxis are cheap but have no timetable: agree a private taxi fare before you ride.
Late at night
No rail. Minibus taxis stop running in the evening: book a private car for anything after dark.

See and do

    The hilltop fortress of King Moshoeshoe I, about 30 km east of Maseru: a guided climb of two to three hours plus the ride; go in the morning and be back before dusk.

    The hat-shaped building on Kingsway, a symbol of the country: a craft and information stop of about half an hour; check what is open before you plan around it.

Language

Almost everyone speaks Sesotho, and English is official and widely understood in towns. Greeting properly — with the right title for age — matters more than anywhere else in the region.

  • 'Lumela' (hello, to one person), 'Lumelang' (to several), 'Kea leboha' (thank you), 'Khotso' (peace, also a greeting).
  • 'Ntate' for a man, 'Mme' for a woman: use them.

Etiquette, safety and scams

  • Greeting: 'Lumela ntate / mme', then wait for 'Khotso'; avoid: Asking directions without a greeting
  • Handshake: Soft, sometimes with a three-part grip; avoid: Crushing grips
  • Villages: Ask for the chief when visiting; avoid: Walking through fields and kraals
  • Photos: Ask herders first; avoid: Initiates and ceremonies

  • Ask before photographing people, and do not photograph police, the military or government buildings.
  • Greet people before asking a question.
  • Do not photograph the royal palace or its guards.

  • Border 'helpers' and forms: Forms are free; fill them yourself.
  • Child begging for sweets: Do not hand out sweets or money; support schools through lodges.
  • ATM skimming and 'helpful' strangers: Use ATMs inside banks and malls.
