country

AngolaAngola

First trip: 2–3 nights in Luanda, then fly south to Lubango for 3 nights (Serra da Leba, Tundavala) with a day or two on the Namibe coast; add Kalandula Falls from Malanje only with a spare 2 nights and a driver.

Not field-verified

Angola is large, tourism infrastructure is thin outside Luanda, and road trips between regions take long days, so fly between bases and hire a driver locally. Luanda is expensive and traffic-heavy; keep it short. Portuguese is essential outside hotels. The dry, cooler season (roughly May–September) is the easier time for road travel.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Check visa and entry rules for your passport on Angola's official migration service (SME) portal before booking; visa-free and e-visa rules have changed in recent years.
  • Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check the yellow fever vaccination certificate requirement for entry, which is strictly checked for many travellers.
  • Do not photograph government buildings, the presidential palace area, military sites, police or the airport.

Etiquette

  • Greet with a handshake and a few words of Portuguese (bom dia, obrigado or obrigada).
  • Dress smartly in Luanda; appearance matters in offices and restaurants.
  • Ask before photographing people.
Rainy season (roughly Oct–Apr)
Rural roads become slow or impassable; heavy downpours in Luanda.
Independence Day (Nov 11)
National holiday; offices close.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 4/5

  • Currency is the Angolan kwanza (AOA). Foreign cards work at some larger hotels; many ATMs do not accept foreign cards, so bring US dollars or euros as backup.
  • Change money only at banks or licensed exchange offices; street exchange is illegal.
  • Luanda is one of the more expensive cities in Africa for hotels and restaurants; budget accordingly.

Safety

  • Street crime, including armed robbery, happens in Luanda: use hotel-arranged transport, especially after dark, and keep phones out of sight.
  • Landmines remain in some rural areas: stay on roads and marked paths, and follow local guidance.
  • Some governments advise against travel to parts of the country, including the Lunda provinces and Cabinda: check your own government's advice before you go.
  • Carry a copy of your passport and visa; police checkpoints are common.

Angola connects to Namibia overland in the south and by air to Johannesburg, Lisbon and regional hubs; check border rules for your passport before planning overland.
