Getting around Victoria: public transport, passes and taxis

Victoria sits in the middle of Gozo, so almost every trip on the island starts or ends at the bus terminus in the centre. Match the mode to the trip: walk inside the walls, bus for daytime hops to Xagħra, Għajnsielem or the coast, ride-hailing for evenings, luggage and anywhere the bus does not reach, and a car only if you are staying outside the centre and want to move on your own schedule.

The centre is compact: Independence Square, It-Tokk, the Citadel and the main shopping streets are all within a short walk of each other. You do not need a bus or taxi to move between them, and walking is usually faster than driving because parking is scarce and streets are narrow.

The one climb worth planning is the Citadel, which sits above the town. It is a short but steady uphill walk, and the lanes are stepped in places, so allow a little extra time in summer heat or with luggage.

Gozo's buses run under the national Tallinja network, with Victoria as the hub. Routes fan out to Xagħra, Għajnsielem and Mġarr, Marsalforn, Xlendi and the rest of the island, so a single change in Victoria usually gets you anywhere on Gozo. Services are frequent enough in summer and thinner in winter, especially in the evening.

Fares are low and set by season — expect roughly €2–3 for a single journey, with the exact band to confirm before you travel. Buy on board or use a Tallinja card if you are staying a while; the card is the cheaper option for repeat trips. Buses can fill and skip stops at peak times, so leave a margin if you are connecting to a ferry.

Bolt, Uber and the local app eCabs all operate on Gozo, and for short hops around Victoria they are usually the simplest option in the evening or with bags. Expect a short cross-town run to cost under €10, with longer runs to the ferry at Mġarr or to Xlendi costing more — check the app before you book.

There is also a taxi stand near the bus terminus in the centre for when you do not want to wait for an app. Agree the fare or confirm the meter before you set off, and expect higher prices on festa nights and public holidays when demand spikes.

A hire car makes sense if you are based outside Victoria and want to reach rural corners, beaches and early ferry sailings on your own schedule. Rates run about €25–60 a day depending on season and vehicle. Driving is on the left, roads are narrow and parking in Victoria is limited, so most visitors park on the edge of the centre and walk in.

Scooters and e-bikes are available in the main tourist areas, but Gozo's lanes are narrow, surfaces vary and summer heat is real. Only ride if you are confident and insured for it.

Budget for transport only when you leave the centre. Walking is free, buses are a few euros a trip, and ride-hailing is the flexible middle option. A hire car is the biggest single cost, and it only pays off if you use it most of the day.

Plan around the ferry if you are crossing to Malta: buses connect Victoria to Mġarr, but evening services are limited, so a late arrival may mean a taxi. Keep a small amount of cash for the bus and the taxi stand, even though cards and apps are widely accepted.
