Best day trips from Victoria: how to get there and what to see

Everything below starts at Victoria's bus terminal, a few minutes' walk from Independence Square and the Cittadella. Gozo is small: no trip on this list takes more than half a day of travel, except the crossings to Malta.

Times are one way from Victoria and assume the bus, not a car. Fares are 2026 estimates; check the operator's current card and season rules before you travel.

Ġgantija and Xagħra. Two temple buildings older than the Egyptian pyramids sit on the edge of Xagħra, a short ride from Victoria. Pair them with the village square and, if you have time, the Ta' Kola windmill. This is the one trip to do even in poor weather, since the site is covered and the village has cafés.

Ramla Bay. The island's best-known sandy beach, reached by bus 302 or 322. Go early in July and August: the bay fills by mid-morning and the return buses are crowded. There is a small kiosk, but bring water.

Marsalforn and the salt pans. A fishing-town seafront with restaurants, plus the Xwejni salt pans a short walk or bike ride along the coast road. Good for a slow lunch rather than a full day.

Comino and the Blue Lagoon. Boats leave from Mġarr harbour, a 10-minute bus ride from Victoria, and from Malta. In high season the lagoon is busy and shade is scarce; a morning departure is calmer. Check sailing times and whether your operator runs in winter.

Mdina or Valletta. Both are on Malta and need a full day: bus to Mġarr, ferry to Ċirkewwa, then bus onward. Mdina is the shorter, quieter option; Valletta needs a full day and rewards an early start. If you are based on Gozo for only two or three nights, stay on Gozo instead.

Gozo buses are cheap and the network is built around Victoria, so a car is optional. A single ticket is a 2026 estimate of €2.50 in summer and €1.50 in winter, with day and 7-day cards that pay off if you ride more than twice. Temple entry is separate; the Multisite Pass covers several sites, so price it against the number you plan to visit.

The ferry is the main fixed cost on a Malta day trip: a foot-passenger return is a 2026 estimate of €4.65–€5, and you pay on the Malta side in one direction. Add Malta bus fares and a full day out can pass €20 before food. Meals in Xagħra or Marsalforn are usually cheaper than in Valletta.

Start at the Victoria bus terminal rather than trying to flag a bus on the road; most routes begin there and you get a seat. Sunday and public-holiday timetables are thinner, so check the day's board the evening before.

In summer, do the beach or the boat first and the village second, and carry more water than you think you need. In winter, buses still run but some boat services stop; confirm before you build a day around the sea.
