Victoria airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Victoria sits in the middle of Gozo, and Gozo has no airport. Every route from MLA involves a road leg to Ċirkewwa in the north of the main island, the Gozo Channel ferry to Mġarr, and then a short hop to Victoria. The choice is really about how much of that you want to organise yourself.

A taxi or ride-hail to the ferry terminal plus the public ferry and bus is the cheapest sensible route. A private transfer or a pre-booked shuttle removes the changes but costs several times more. Hiring a car at the airport only makes sense if you plan to drive on Gozo for several days.

At Malta International, follow signs to the taxi rank outside arrivals, or open Bolt, Uber or eCabs and set the destination to Ċirkewwa ferry terminal. The drive north takes roughly 40–50 minutes outside rush hour (check); allow more on summer weekends when the coast road fills up.

At Ċirkewwa, buy a foot-passenger ticket at the Gozo Channel kiosk and board the next crossing. The ferry takes about 25 minutes to Mġarr. Check the current ticketing rule on the operator site before you travel: on this route foot passengers have historically paid on the Gozo side on the way back, so keep the ticket.

From Mġarr, buses run to Victoria in about 15–20 minutes (check the route number and timetable for your date); a taxi at the terminal costs more but leaves immediately. If you are driving, stay in the vehicle and pay the car fare on board.

The public route is cheap once you are on the ferry, but the taxi to Ċirkewwa is the big line item. Ride-hailing prices can be lower than the airport rank and rise on festa nights and in bad weather (check). The ferry fare is per foot passenger and per vehicle; the bus fare is a single flat fare by season — confirm current fares on the operator sites.

A private transfer quoted from the airport to a Victoria address is the simplest option with luggage, and the price is fixed at booking. If you are a group of three or four, it can come close to the public route once you add the taxi leg.

Time your landing. Check the last ferry and the last Mġarr–Victoria bus for your arrival date before you book a late flight. If the connections do not work, a night on the main island and a morning crossing is usually easier than a long taxi at the other end.

Pack for a change of mode. You will handle your own bags on and off the ferry and the bus, so a backpack beats a large hard case. Keep a jacket handy: the ferry deck is windy even in summer.

Check current bus payment options and fares on the Malta Public Transport site before you rely on a card or contactless. Mobile coverage on both islands is good, so an eSIM set up before you fly saves hunting for a shop in Victoria.
