Best time to visit Victoria: weather, crowds and events by month

Victoria sits inland on Gozo, so the sea temperature matters less than the wind, the heat and how full the ferries are. The table below lines up the four realistic windows: what you get, what it costs and what it changes about your day.

January and February are the quietest and cheapest months. Days run 14–17 °C with rain and windy spells, so plan the Citadella and the archaeology museum rather than the coast. Carnival falls in February, with celebrations in Valletta and Nadur on Gozo; 10 February is St Paul's Shipwreck, a public holiday. Boat trips and diving are limited.

March and April warm up quickly. Wildflowers cover Gozo in March, and Holy Week processions in April are the biggest spring event across Malta and Gozo, with some sites shut on Good Friday. Sea temperatures stay cool, so swimming is for the hardy.

May and June are the sweet spot for most travellers: warm, green, walkable, and the sea becomes swimmable by late May. June brings beach season, the first village festas and Mnarja on 29 June in Buskett woods on the main island.

July and August are hot, crowded and priced at peak. Victoria's own festa season peaks around Santa Marija on 15 August, when ferries to Gozo are packed and hotels on the island sell out. The eco-contribution paid by visitors rises on 1 July 2026 — check the current rate before you book.

September stays warm, with the warmest sea of the year and Victory Day regatta on 8 September plus Independence Day on 21 September. October is the better-value version of September: warm days, fewer people, and events such as Birgufest and Notte Bianca in Valletta — check dates.

November and December turn cool and wet, with the first storms usually in November. The sea is still swimmable early in November. December brings nativity cribs, Christmas lights and Republic Day on 13 December; many restaurants close on 25 December.

Gozo's crowd pattern follows the ferries. July, August and the first half of September are the busiest, and the 15 August weekend is the single most congested date on the island. April–June and October are medium; January, February and November are quiet.

Prices track the same curve. Winter hotel rates on Gozo are the lowest of the year, spring and autumn sit in the middle, and July–August is peak. The Malta eco-contribution rises on 1 July 2026, which adds a small fixed cost per night to every stay — check the current figure when you book.

If you want the festa atmosphere without peak prices, aim for late June or early September. If you want empty streets and low rates, accept rain and short daylight in January or February.

These are 2026 estimates for planning, not quotes. Winter nights on Gozo are the cheapest of the year; July and August are the most expensive, and the 15 August weekend is the worst value of all.

Add the visitor eco-contribution, which rises on 1 July 2026, and the Gozo ferry, which is paid on the return leg for foot passengers. Ferries run frequently and take about 25 minutes from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr — check the current timetable.

Book July–August and the 15 August weekend early: Gozo hotels and the ferry queues are the bottleneck, not the flights.

Build your day around the heat in summer. Walk the Citadella and Victoria's lanes before 10am or after 5pm, and use the middle of the day for indoor sites, lunch and the bus to Xagħra or Għajnsielem.

Spring and autumn are the best months for walking and for the short hops to Xagħra's Ġgantija temples and Għajnsielem's harbour. Winter is fine for sightseeing but not for swimming; the sea sits around 15 °C.

Check the calendar before you fix dates: Good Friday moves each year, and festa dates shift with it. Public holidays close offices and some restaurants.
