Getting around Victoria Falls: public transport, passes and taxis

Victoria Falls is a small town built around one attraction. The rainforest gate, the craft market, the main restaurant strip and most mid-range hotels sit within a 20–30 minute walk of each other, so walking covers a large share of a normal day. Everything else — the airport, the border bridge, out-of-town lodges, evening restaurants — is a short taxi ride.

Prices below are 2026 estimates in US dollars, the currency most visitors actually pay in. Confirm the current figure with your hotel or driver before you commit.

The centre is flat and compact. From the main hotel strip on Livingstone Way you can reach the rainforest entrance, the Victoria Falls Bridge viewpoint and the craft market on foot in under half an hour. Pavements are patchy and some roads have no shoulder, so keep to the side and watch for traffic.

Daytime walking is normal and many visitors do it. After dark the streets empty and lighting is limited, so take a taxi even for short hops; this is the same advice the safety page gives.

Taxis wait at hotels, the rainforest gate and the town centre. There are no meters in practice: you agree a fare before getting in. In-town trips run about US$5–15 depending on distance and time of day, and the airport run is more. Have small US dollar notes ready, because drivers rarely carry change.

Ride-hailing apps have thin coverage here and you should not count on one arriving quickly; treat taxis arranged by your hotel as the reliable option, especially for early activity pick-ups and late dinners. If you are staying at an out-of-town lodge, ask reception to book the return trip at the same time as the outbound one.

Shared minibuses, known locally as combis, run along the main roads and out to the suburbs. They are cheap, cash-only and aimed at residents rather than visitors; routes and stopping points are not signposted for tourists, so use them only if you are comfortable asking your way. There is no day pass or tourist travelcard for Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls International (VFA) is about 20 minutes by car from town. Most hotels run shuttles or can book a taxi; if you are arriving late, arrange the pick-up in advance rather than hoping for a car at the rank.

The Zambia border is at the Victoria Falls Bridge, which you cross on foot. If your trip also includes the Zambian side or Chobe in Botswana, the US$50 KAZA UNIVISA bought on arrival saves you queuing for separate visas. The border is open roughly 06:00–22:00 — check current hours before a late crossing.

A short stay rarely needs more than walking plus three or four taxi rides. Budget about US$20–40 per person for local transport across two or three days, more if you are at an out-of-town lodge or taking the airport run both ways. Self-drive only makes sense if you are heading on to Hwange or Bulawayo, where a 4x4 runs US$80–200 a day and fuel availability varies.

Agree every fare before you get in, and confirm whether the price is per person or per car. Carry small US dollar notes; Zimbabwe also uses local currency, but visitors generally pay in dollars and change can be short.

Mobile data helps for maps and for calling your hotel. A travel eSIM set up before you fly is simpler than buying a local SIM on arrival. Power cuts happen, so keep a power bank charged for your phone.
