Best time to visit Victoria Falls: weather, crowds and events by month

Victoria Falls sits at about 900 m on the Zambezi, so days are warm year-round and the real variables are water volume, spray and crowd levels. The table below pairs each window with what it costs you in money and comfort.

March to May is the flood window. The Zambezi carries its heaviest volume, spray soaks the rainforest walk and the far side of the gorge disappears into mist. Views from the Zimbabwe side are dramatic but often wet: a rain jacket beats an umbrella. Full-moon nights in this period can produce lunar rainbows in the spray.

June to August is the classic first-trip window. Water is still high enough to fill the gorge, spray has eased, and the viewpoints along the rainforest trail give clear sightlines. Days are dry and mild, nights cool enough for a fleece. This is also when Hwange's pans start pulling elephants and the safari season is fully open, which is why lodge rates and flight seats are at their tightest.

September and October turn hot and dry. The falls drop to a fraction of flood volume; by October the Zambian side can be almost dry while the Zimbabwe side keeps flowing. Game viewing in Hwange and on the Zambezi is at its best because animals concentrate at water. October is the hottest month, with valley temperatures above 40 °C, so plan activities for early morning and late afternoon.

November to February is the green season. Afternoon storms, rising water from December, low rates and short queues. Some bush camps close from mid-November, and back roads in the parks can be difficult. Victoria Falls town itself stays open and busy over Christmas and New Year, when regional families travel.

Rates in Victoria Falls move with the safari calendar rather than with the falls themselves. High season runs roughly July to October plus the Christmas period; green-season rates from January to March can be 30–50% lower for the same room. Park entry is charged per person per day at the gate and is separate from any activity fee; confirm the current foreign-visitor rate before you budget. Activities such as the gorge swing, helicopter flights and Zambezi cruises are priced in US dollars and rarely discount outside high season.

Bring a light rain jacket and a dry bag for the rainforest walk in March to May, when spray reaches the path. Non-slip shoes matter on the wet basalt. In the dry months, dust, sun and 30 °C+ afternoons are the issue: hat, sunscreen and water.

The falls are a short walk from most of Victoria Falls town, so you do not need a car for the main viewpoints. Transfers from the airport take about 20–25 minutes; arrange one before arrival because taxi supply is thin at night. If you plan to cross to the Zambian side or to Chobe, the KAZA UNIVISA is the usual choice and is bought on arrival.

Mobile data in town is workable but patchy at the viewpoints and in the parks. A regional eSIM is easier than hunting for a local SIM on a short stay.

Zimbabwe's public holidays mostly affect domestic travel rather than international arrivals. Easter weekend and Independence Day in April bring regional visitors to Victoria Falls and Kariba. Heroes' and Defence Forces Days in early August add a long weekend in the middle of high season, so book early. Christmas and New Year are the busiest town weeks of the year, with families arriving from Harare and South Africa.
