Best time to visit Zimbabwe: weather and seasons by month

Zimbabwe has three travel seasons rather than four. The dry season runs May to October, the green (wet) season November to March, and the shoulder weeks of April and early November sit between them. What you book depends on which of the two headline experiences you want: Victoria Falls in flood, or big game at the pans and rivers.

The table below gives the verdict, crowd level and price level for each month, matching the country page. Use it to pick a month, then check the specific park or camp you want, because closures vary by operator.

The falls are the one Zimbabwe sight where the best month is not the safari month. Flow peaks around March to May, when spray rises high enough to be seen from a distance and the walkways on the Zimbabwe side are soaked. Bring a rain jacket and a dry bag for your phone; the Zimbabwe side keeps water all year, unlike the Zambian side, which can run almost dry late in the year.

From June to August the spray drops and the view opens up: you see the full curtain of water rather than a white wall. This is also when the falls sit inside the comfortable dry season, so it pairs well with Hwange. October is the hottest month and the lowest flow, but the Zimbabwe side still has water and the crowds thin out.

Full-moon nights in the high-water months can produce lunar rainbows in the spray; this is a real reason to time a visit to the March–May window (check the moon phase for your dates).

The dry season concentrates animals. From about July the pans in Hwange start drawing elephants and other game to pumped water points, and the bush thins out so sightings get easier. August and September are the strongest months for game in Hwange and Mana Pools, and September is hot and dry with animals fixed at water.

Mana Pools is the seasonal exception. Most camps there close from roughly November to March, when the Zambezi floodplain is wet and access tracks are difficult. If Mana Pools is the point of your trip, plan July to October. The Zambezi Valley and Kariba are low-lying and extremely hot in October, with temperatures above 40 °C, so build in shade and water time.

The rains from November to March turn the country green and bring newborn animals and birds, but the grass is high, water is everywhere and game spreads out. That is the trade-off for the low green-season rates.

Zimbabwe's weather depends more on altitude than on latitude. The Highveld, where Harare and Bulawayo sit at 1,000–1,500 m, is mild year-round with genuinely cold winter nights in June and July and afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Pack a warm layer for early game drives even in the dry season.

The Zambezi Valley and the Victoria Falls area are lower and hotter, with October the worst month for heat. The Eastern Highlands are cooler and wetter, with mist and rain through the summer and the best hiking conditions from April to October.

The practical rule: May to October is the dry safari season, April to May pairs green countryside with a roaring falls, and the rains from November to March make back roads in Hwange and Mana Pools unreliable.

Zimbabwe's safari pricing follows the seasons closely. Peak season, roughly July to October, is when lodge rates are highest and the popular Hwange and Mana Pools camps fill months ahead. Shoulder months such as May, June and November often give similar conditions at lower rates.

The green season, January to March and December, is the cheapest window, with lower lodge rates and fewer visitors. The catch is rain, heat and closed camps. Victoria Falls itself stays busy over the Christmas and New Year holidays and around Easter, when regional visitors arrive.

Public holidays mostly affect offices and transport rather than travellers, but a few dates matter. Easter weekend brings regional visitors to Victoria Falls and Kariba. Independence Day on 18 April and the Heroes' and Defence Forces Days in August are national occasions with ceremonies and some closures. Christmas and Boxing Day see families travelling, and Victoria Falls is busy.

The bigger planning issue is camp closures. Several Mana Pools camps shut from about November to March, and some bush camps elsewhere close in the wettest weeks. Always confirm your specific camp's opening dates before booking flights, because operators differ.
