Zimbabwe

Best places to visit in Zimbabwe: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, go to Victoria Falls (2–3 nights), then Hwange or Mana Pools for 3–4 nights of safari, adding Matobo and Great Zimbabwe if you have 10 days or more. Skip the long road days: use transfers or light aircraft. If you only have a week, do Falls plus Hwange and leave the east for a second trip.

The shortlist by passport, month and budget

Zimbabwe's highlights split into three groups: the falls, the safari parks and the history-and-highlands south and east. Most travellers fly into Victoria Falls, do the falls, then move to one safari area. Which one depends on your month and how much you want to spend on flights and park fees.

Use the table to pick your two or three stops, then check the month column against your dates. The falls are at their heaviest from about March to August; the dry-season game months are July to October in Hwange and June to October on the Zambezi.

Nights are a planning guide, not a rule. Park fees and lodge rates change; treat prices as 2026 estimates and confirm before booking.

How to build the trip, step by step

Step 1: fix your dates against the seasons. If you want the falls in full flow, aim for March to August. If game viewing matters more, aim for July to October in Hwange or June to October on the Zambezi. If you want both, late July to August is the overlap.

Step 2: pick your safari area. Hwange is the easiest first safari: road-transferable from Victoria Falls, big elephant herds at the pumped pans in the dry season, and a range of lodge prices. Mana Pools is wilder, with walking and canoeing on the Zambezi, and is usually reached by light aircraft. Lake Kariba suits houseboats and Matusadona, and is slower and cheaper than a fly-in camp.

Step 3: add history if you have the days. Great Zimbabwe near Masvingo is a medieval stone city and deserves a night or two with a site guide. Matobo Hills outside Bulawayo gives rhinos on foot and rock art, and pairs with Khami Ruins.

Step 4: decide how you move. Long road days are the main thing that ruins a Zimbabwe itinerary. Use day transfers with a driver, or fly the long legs. Hwange to Mana Pools is normally a light-aircraft hop; Harare is the usual exit for Mana Pools.

Step 5: sort entry and money before you book. If you will also see the Zambian side of the falls or cross to Chobe, the KAZA UNIVISA bought on arrival covers those crossings. Carry US dollars in cash for park fees, tips and small purchases; card acceptance is uneven outside the main hotels.

  • 7 days: Victoria Falls (3) + Hwange (4)
  • 10 days: Victoria Falls (2) + Hwange (4) + Mana Pools (4)
  • 14 days: add Matobo (2), Great Zimbabwe (2) and a night in Harare
  • Book safari camps early for Jul–Oct; the best ones fill months ahead

Notes and things that change the plan

The falls are a year-round stop but the experience changes with the water. High water (roughly March to August) means spray, rain jackets and fewer views from some paths; low water (roughly September to December) means clearer views and easier photography, with some activities limited by low river levels.

Park fees, conservancy levies and activity prices in Victoria Falls are set in US dollars and reviewed periodically, so treat any figure you read as a 2026 estimate and confirm locally. Safari lodges often quote in US dollars too.

Distances are real: Victoria Falls to Hwange is a short transfer, but Bulawayo to Masvingo and Harare to Mana Pools are long days. Flying the long legs costs more but buys back a day each time.

Fuel, cash and card access can be patchy outside cities; plan to carry enough cash for the days you are in parks. Check your travel insurance covers safari activities, canoeing and any adventure sports you book at the falls, since standard policies often exclude them.

  • High water: Mar–Aug, spray and rain jackets
  • Low water: Sep–Dec, clearer views, some activities limited
  • Dry-season game: Hwange Jul–Oct, Mana Pools Jun–Oct
  • Carry US dollars cash; card use is uneven outside hotels
