Zimbabwe itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Pick the length first, then the route. Every option below starts at Victoria Falls because that is where most international flights land and where the KAZA UNIVISA is bought on arrival.

Nights are working numbers, not rules. Add a night to Hwange or Mana Pools before you add a new stop: two nights in a park is one full game drive, three is a safari.

Land at Victoria Falls, sleep 2–3 nights, and use one full day for the falls themselves: the rainforest walk in the morning, the bridge and riverfront later. In April–May spray soaks you, so bring a rain jacket and bag your phone; in the dry months go early for rainbows.

A Chobe day trip crosses at Kazungula into Botswana. It is a long day with border formalities at both ends, and it only makes sense if your visa covers the crossing — the KAZA UNIVISA is the usual answer (check eligibility for your passport).

Then transfer to Hwange for 3–4 nights. Game viewing is best in the dry season, roughly July to October, when elephants gather at the pumped pans. Two nights here is a taste; four gives you morning and evening drives plus a full day in the park.

Ten days: cut Victoria Falls to 2 nights, keep Hwange at 4, then fly to Mana Pools for 4 nights of walking and canoeing on the Zambezi. Fly out through Harare. This is the strongest safari-to-effort ratio in the country.

Fourteen days adds the history and city stops. From Hwange, drive to Bulawayo for Matobo Hills — rhinos on foot and rock art — then on to Masvingo for Great Zimbabwe, where a site guide is worth the fee and the Hill Complex is a morning climb. One night in Harare covers the National Gallery before you fly to Mana Pools.

The road legs are the trade-off. Do them in daylight with a driver rather than pushing a self-drive schedule, and treat each transfer as half a day lost to safari.

With 21 days you can keep the 14-day route and add one of two extensions. Lake Kariba and Matusadona suit houseboats and slow days on the water, best May–October. Gonarezhou in the southeast is remote cliffs and elephants, best May–October, and needs more planning for access and fuel.

Do not add both unless you cut nights elsewhere. A three-week trip with six one-night stops is a driving holiday, not a safari.

Book dry-season lodges in Hwange and Mana Pools months ahead; the best camps are small and sell out. Shoulder months are cheaper and quieter but some camps close in the rains.

Zimbabwe runs on US dollars for most tourist spending, with card use improving but not universal. Carry small notes for tips and park fees.

Distances are long and fuel stops are sparse outside the main corridors. If you self-drive, plan fuel and avoid night driving: animals on the road are a real hazard.
