How to get to Zimbabwe: airports, flights and border crossings

Zimbabwe has three airports that matter to visitors. Victoria Falls (VFA) sits 20–30 minutes from the falls and is the natural arrival point for a falls-and-safari trip into Hwange, Chobe or the Zambezi. Harare (HRE) is the main long-haul gateway and the better choice for Great Zimbabwe, Mana Pools, the eastern highlands or a night in the capital. Bulawayo (BUQ) serves Matobo Hills and Hwange's southern side, but flights are thinner and usually route through Johannesburg.

Almost every international arrival connects through a hub: Johannesburg (about 1 h 40 m to Harare, 1 h 30 m to Victoria Falls), Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai. South African Airways, Airlink, Fastjet, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways are the names you will see on schedules; confirm current routes before booking, as they change seasonally. Regional hops between Harare, Victoria Falls and Bulawayo are short and cheap enough to replace a long road day.

There is no nonstop service from Europe, North America, Australia or New Zealand, so every trip is at least one connection and often two. The numbers below are door-to-door flight time including the layover, and they move with the routing you pick. Johannesburg is the shortest and most frequent connection; the Gulf and East African hubs add hours but can be cheaper or fit better schedules.

Zimbabwe is reachable overland from four neighbours, and the crossings are used daily by buses, trucks and self-drive travellers. Beitbridge from South Africa is the busiest and slowest; Victoria Falls bridge from Zambia is the easiest for tourists and walkable; Kazungula from Botswana crosses the Zambezi near the Chobe–Victoria Falls corridor; Forbes and Machipanda link Mozambique to Mutare and the eastern highlands. Expect queues, paperwork and a small road toll or carbon tax at some posts.

Long-distance buses run from Johannesburg to Harare and Bulawayo, and from Lusaka and Gaborone to Harare. They are cheap and slow, often overnight, and the border stop can add hours. There are no scheduled passenger ferries into Zimbabwe; cruise ships call at Walvis Bay in Namibia or Maputo in Mozambique, and you would continue by road or air. If you plan to see the Zambian side of the falls or Chobe as well, the KAZA UNIVISA is the single most useful document to buy.

Most Western passports can get a visa on arrival at Harare, Victoria Falls and the main land borders, but the rules differ by nationality and change without much notice. Check your own status before you fly, and carry a printed confirmation if you applied online. The KAZA UNIVISA, around US$50 in 2026, covers Zimbabwe and Zambia for day trips across the falls and is worth it if you will cross more than once.

Bring US dollars in cash for visas, taxes and tips; cards work at hotels but not at most border posts. A yellow fever certificate may be asked for if you arrive from a country with transmission risk. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is close to essential here, because serious cases are often flown to South Africa.

Fly into the airport closest to your first two nights, not the cheapest fare, because a Harare arrival for a Victoria Falls trip adds a flight or a long drive. If you are doing both ends of the country, an open-jaw ticket into Victoria Falls and out of Harare (or the reverse) saves a backtrack. Regional hops between the three main airports are short; book them early in the high season from July to October.

On arrival, buy a local eSIM or SIM at the airport if you need data, change only what you need into local currency, and arrange your transfer before you land — airport taxi pricing is negotiable and better fixed in advance. Road transfers between Victoria Falls and Hwange take a few hours; light aircraft shuttles cost more and save the day.
