Best day trips from Victoria Falls: how to get there and what to see

Match the trip to the time you have. A half day suits the rainforest, the bridge and a river cruise. A full day is needed for anything across a border, because you lose an hour or more to immigration in each direction.

Chobe is the headline trip: a boat on the Chobe River in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon, with elephants almost guaranteed in the dry months. Livingstone is the cultural and adrenaline option on the Zambian side, with the falls viewed from the other bank and the Livingstone Museum in town. Zambezi National Park and the private concessions upstream are the low-effort choice: you are back at your hotel for dinner.

Chobe sits about 70–80 km west of Victoria Falls, reached via the Kazungula border. Most operators run a boat cruise on the Chobe River first, then a game drive in the park, with lunch in Kasane between the two. Pickup at your Victoria Falls hotel is typically 06:00–07:30 and you are back in the evening.

The river is the reason to come. In the dry season, from roughly June to October, elephant herds concentrate on the Chobe waterfront and buffalo, hippo and crocodile are routine. The park also holds lion, leopard and a large antelope list. If you want more than a rushed day, an overnight in Kasane or a lodge inside Chobe turns two long drives into two relaxed game sessions.

The border is straightforward for most nationalities but slow at peak times. The Victoria Falls Bridge crosses to Zambia, and Livingstone is about 10 km beyond the border post. The Zambian side of the falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park) gives a different angle on the same water, and in the low-water months you can walk down to the Boiling Pot and across to Livingstone Island on a guided trip.

In town, the Livingstone Museum covers David Livingstone and Zambian history, and the market and riverside bars fill an afternoon. Adventure operators on this side run rafting, gorge swings and microlight flights. A day trip typically leaves mid-morning and returns after sunset, so you can watch the river at golden hour from the Zambian bank.

Border waits at Victoria Falls Bridge can run from 20 minutes to over an hour in high season. The KAZA UNIVISA covers Zambia as well, which saves a separate visa fee for many travellers; check your nationality's rules before relying on it.

Zambezi National Park starts a few kilometres upstream of town and is the simplest wildlife fix. Morning and late-afternoon game drives look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and the occasional lion along the river, and you are back within three to four hours. The private concessions further upstream offer the same animals with fewer vehicles.

A sunset river cruise is the classic low-effort evening: two to three hours on the Zambezi with hippos, crocodiles and water birds, drinks included on most boats. On the doorstep, the rainforest walk through Victoria Falls National Park, the Big Tree and the Victoria Falls Bridge fill a half day without any transport beyond a short taxi.

Hwange National Park is the one to think twice about as a day trip. It is roughly 3–4 hours each way from Victoria Falls, so a day trip means six to eight hours of driving for a few hours in the park. It works far better as a two- to four-night stay, which is how most itineraries use it.

Shared tours are the default and the cheapest way to do a cross-border day. Private vehicles, small-group departures and lodge-run trips cost more but give you flexibility on timing and stops. Park fees, border fees and the Botswana or Zambia levies are sometimes quoted separately, so ask what the final price includes before you pay a deposit.

Budget travellers can cut costs by basing themselves in Victoria Falls town, using shared shuttles and booking local activities directly rather than through a hotel concierge. There is no useful public transport to Chobe or Hwange, so a tour or a hired car with a driver is the realistic option.

Book cross-border trips at least a day ahead in high season, and check the pickup time the evening before. Take your passport, a copy of it, and any visa paperwork. Carry small US dollar notes for fees and tips; cards are accepted by larger operators but not at every border desk.

Sun protection matters: the Zambezi valley is hot from September to November and the UV is strong year-round. A hat, high-factor sunscreen and two litres of water get you through a game drive. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication before the Chobe boat and the Hwange road.
