Tunisia is compact in the north and stretched in the south: Tunis to Djerba or Tozeur is a full day overland. Trips break when the Saharan south is squeezed into a day tour, or when summer beach crowds and heat are not planned for. The rules that apply everywhere: base in Tunis for the north, use louages (shared minibuses) or trains for the coast, fly or take a long day for the south, and carry cash.

Country rules

- The Tunisian dinar is a closed currency: it cannot legally be taken in or out; exchange on arrival and keep receipts to change leftovers back.
- Do not bring a drone without prior authorisation; they are confiscated at customs.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly outside beach resorts; cover shoulders and knees in medinas and holy sites.
- Non-Muslims can usually visit the courtyard of the Great Mosque of Kairouan but not most prayer halls.
- Ask before photographing people; do not photograph police, military or government buildings.
- Use your right hand for eating and passing things.

- Cafés and many restaurants close in daylight; evenings are busy and transport fills before Eid.

- Currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND). Cards work in larger hotels and some restaurants; louages, taxis, markets and cafés are cash.
- ATMs are common in towns; withdraw in cities before heading to the desert.
- Yellow city taxis should use the meter; insist on it or agree a price before setting off.

Safety
- Touts and unofficial guides in medinas and around Sidi Bou Said: politely decline and agree any price in advance.
- Heat in summer and in the south: carry water and plan midday indoors.
- Road safety is the main everyday risk; avoid driving at night outside cities.
- Emergency: 197 police, 190 ambulance, 198 fire.
- Most governments advise against all travel to areas near the Libyan border and to some mountain areas near the Algerian border, and against all but essential travel in parts of the far south; check your own government's advice before planning south of Tataouine or near the borders.
Tunisia is a short flight or ferry (from Marseille, Genoa, Palermo) from southern Europe.
