Thompson-Nicola is a transit-shaped region: two highways (1 and 5) meet at Kamloops, and almost everything else is a stop along them. Sleep in Kamloops, use it as a base for Sun Peaks, Cache Creek, Merritt and the Fraser Canyon, and only move hotels if you are heading north to Wells Gray or east to the Rockies.
