Cache Creek is a town of under 1,000 people at the meeting of Highway 1 and Highway 97 in British Columbia's Thompson-Nicola region, about 45 minutes from Kamloops by car. It is a fuel-and-bed stop on the way to the Cariboo, Prince George or the Okanagan, with two worthwhile stops nearby: Historic Hat Creek and the Ashcroft Manor teahouse. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon; one night covers it.

Getting around

The town itself is small enough to walk in 15–20 minutes. Everything outside it — Hat Creek, Ashcroft, the parks — needs a private car. BC Transit runs a Clinton–Ashcroft route through Cache Creek twice a week (Wed and Fri), and Health Connections trips to Kamloops three days a week, reserved two business days ahead.

Watch out

Safety

A small highway town; the real risks are the drive (canyon closures, wildlife at dusk, winter ice) and summer heat or smoke, not crime. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
  • Highway 1 through the Fraser and Thompson canyons closes for crashes, rockfall and wildfires: check DriveBC before you commit.
  • Fuel up here before the long empty stretch north on Highway 97 toward 100 Mile House.
  • Summer interior heat: 35 °C afternoons are normal in July and August.
  • Wildfire smoke can cut visibility and air quality in July–August; have a plan B.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 99 and the back roads.
