Boston Bar is a village of about 190 people on the Fraser Canyon stretch of Highway 1, roughly 3 hours from Vancouver and 45 minutes north of Hope. It exists for travellers as a break in the drive: a gondola over the canyon, a Nlaka'pamux heritage village, a historic suspension bridge, and rafting on the Nahatlatch. Two or three hours covers the village; one night covers the canyon properly.

Getting around

You need a car. The village is a strip on Highway 1 and the sights are 5–22 km apart. No local bus. VIA Rail's The Canadian stops at Boston Bar westbound and North Bend eastbound, up to three times a week, but the station is not a transport hub for the canyon.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime village; the real risks are the highway (rockfall, wildlife, winter ice), patchy cell coverage and seasonal closures. Tell someone your route if you drive the canyon after dark.
  • Highway 1 through the canyon is two lanes with rockfall and wildlife; drive it in daylight.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the canyon; download offline maps before Hope.
  • Fuel and food are limited: fill up in Hope or Lytton.
  • Hell's Gate Airtram is seasonal (roughly April to mid-October) and closes in the afternoon; check the official site before you commit.
  • Winter brings snow, ice and possible highway closures; check DriveBC.
