Two valleys cut northeast to Inverness: the Great Glen (Fort William to Inverness, via Loch Ness) and Strathspey (the Spey valley, via Aviemore). Inverness is the shared transport hub and the only airport; Aviemore is the Cairngorm base; Fort William is the Ben Nevis and West Highland Line end. There is no railway along the Great Glen between Fort William and Inverness, so pick one valley per trip unless you drive.

Inverness and the Great Glen: Mild for the latitude thanks to the sea, but wet year-round; May–September is the usual walking window.
Strathspey and Cairngorm: Colder and snowier than Inverness; ski conditions vary by season, so check snow reports before booking.
