Destination OS · Night markets, temples, an MRT that reaches everything

Taipei 臺北

Taipei is an MRT city: temples and old streets in the morning, air-conditioned malls and museums at midday, night markets after 18:00 — and carry cash and an umbrella.

Rules in force · 4
  • Taiwan ↗Check visa-exemption length, passport validity and the arrival-card rule on the official sites before you fly.
  • Taiwan ↗An EasyCard (or iPASS) covers MRT, buses, trains in the north and many convenience-store purchases; buy one at the airport or a station.
  • Taiwan ↗When a local government declares a typhoon day, transport and sights can close for the day; follow the official notice, not the forecast alone.
  • Northern Taiwan ↗The north coast and Jiufen are wet for much of the year; carry a compact umbrella and do not plan a sunset view around clear skies.

Overview

Taipei's sights are spread over a flat basin and the MRT connects them, but the city is hot and wet for much of the year and small food stalls are cash-only. The trips that go wrong pay for it in three ways: noon walks in July, no umbrella in a typhoon-season shower, and a landing after 23:00 when the airport MRT has stopped. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; one bed is enough.

Arrive

Gateways
Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)Launch profile 21:00 → Ximending: feasible

TPE to Taipei: the airport MRT to Taipei Main Station in about 40 minutes, then one MRT hop; the risk is landing after 23:00, when the last airport train has gone and a taxi costs NT$1,400 or more.

Move

Default
Walk inside a cluster; MRT between clusters; taxi at night or with bags.
Passes
No pass. An MRT ride is NT$20–35 with an EasyCard; a short taxi starts near NT$85.
Last trains
The MRT stops around midnight; taxis and Uber run all night. Check the last train in Google Maps before dinner.

Luggage

Rule: Older streets have covered arcades with parked scooters and stalls: large suitcases go from the car or MRT exit to the door, not along the arcade.
Lockers
Lockers at Taipei Main Station and many MRT stations; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
Hotels and the airport can arrange bag delivery for a fee; ask before you fly.
Dead zone
Late check-out flights: ask the hotel to hold bags; Taipei Main Station has lockers and, for some airlines, in-town check-in (field-verify).
