Shilin, Taipei: neighborhood guide

Shilin is a large residential district in northern Taipei, not a single square. It runs from the dense streets around Shilin and Jiantan MRT stations up through Tianmu, an older expat and diplomatic quarter with its own shops and restaurants, to the edge of Yangmingshan National Park.

The district holds Taipei's biggest concentration of museums: the National Palace Museum, the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines opposite it, the Taipei Astronomical Museum and the National Taiwan Science Education Center, all within a short bus or walk of each other. Shilin Night Market, the city's largest, sits between Jiantan and Shilin stations and is the reason many visitors know the name.

Day to day it feels local rather than touristy. Streets are wide, there are schools, hospitals and wet markets, and evenings belong to families eating at the night market. Tianmu adds a quieter, greener pocket with international supermarkets and a cinema.

Choose Shilin if your Taipei list is museum-heavy, if you want Yangmingshan or Beitou within a short ride, or if you are travelling with children and value a calmer base. The red line runs straight to Taipei Main Station and downtown without a transfer, so the district is convenient even though it is not central.

Look elsewhere if you want to step out of your hotel into bars, cafés and the East District shopping streets, or if most of your evenings will end downtown after the MRT slows down. Zhongshan and Zhongzheng are more central for a first short trip; the East District suits nightlife.

Within Shilin, staying near Shilin or Jiantan station keeps the night market and the MRT walkable. Tianmu is quieter and greener but needs a bus or a longer walk to the red line.

Shilin Night Market is the main event: oyster omelettes, fried chicken cutlets, giant squid, shaved ice and bubble tea, mostly eaten standing or at shared tables. Prices are low and portions are snack-sized, so plan on two or three stops rather than one meal. It is busiest from about 18:00 to 22:00, and some stalls close on Mondays.

Around Shilin and Jiantan stations there are noodle shops, beef noodle restaurants and breakfast stands that serve soy milk and egg crepes from early morning. Tianmu has a different mix: Japanese restaurants, bakeries, Western cafés and international supermarkets, with prices closer to downtown Taipei.

Vegetarian options exist but are not obvious at the night market; look for labelled Buddhist vegetarian buffets near the stations or ask for no meat and no oyster sauce. Seafood and pork dominate, so check before ordering if you avoid either.

Shilin and Jiantan stations are both on the Tamsui–Xinyi (red) line. Jiantan is the closer stop for the night market; Shilin is the better exit for buses toward the National Palace Museum and Tianmu. From Taipei Main Station the ride is roughly 15–20 minutes with no transfer.

For the National Palace Museum, take a city bus from outside Shilin station rather than walking; the museum sits up Zhishan Road and the walk is long and uphill. Buses also serve the science and astronomy museums, and taxis are cheap for short hops within the district.

A stored-value transit card works on the MRT and buses and saves fumbling for change. From Taoyuan Airport, take the airport MRT to Taipei Main Station and change to the red line; allow about an hour in total.
