What the area is like
Zhongzheng is the administrative centre of Taiwan. Ministries, the Presidential Office Building and the National Taiwan Museum sit within a few blocks of Taipei Main Station, and the wide avenues around them are busy with commuters on weekdays and quiet on Sunday mornings.
The southern end turns academic. Gongguan is the National Taiwan University quarter, with National Taiwan Normal University nearby, and the streets around the main gate fill with cheap eats, bookshops and tea stands aimed at students rather than tourists.
Two green spaces break up the concrete: 228 Peace Park beside the museum, and the grounds of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, where locals practise martial arts around sunrise and honour guards change on the hour. The Taipei Botanical Garden and the National Museum of History sit at the western edge.

Yes, if transport is your priority. Taipei Main Station puts the Red and Blue MRT lines, the TRA network and the high-speed rail in one building, so day trips to Jiufen, Tamsui or the south start without a taxi. Hotels cluster on the streets north and west of the station.
No, if you want evenings out of the door. Zhongzheng is offices and monuments; the bar and restaurant clusters are in the East District and Zhongshan, and the big night markets are in Shilin and elsewhere. Gongguan has student nightlife, but it is a 15-minute ride from the station hotels.
It also suits short stopovers: you can walk to the memorial hall, the museum and the park, and be back at the station for a train in under 20 minutes.

Where to eat
Around Taipei Main Station the food is practical rather than destination dining: noodle shops, dumpling houses and beef noodle places in the lanes off Nanyang Street and Kaifeng Street, plus the basement floors of the station itself and the Q Square mall. Expect NT$100–250 for a bowl or a plate.
Gongguan is the better eating neighbourhood. The lanes by the NTU main gate sell gua bao, fried chicken, shaved ice, tapioca tea and fruit, mostly under NT$100 a portion, and the side streets behind the main row hold sit-down places for students.
For a proper meal, the area around the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the streets off Renai Road have mid-range Taiwanese restaurants and hotpot. Vegetarian and Buddhist restaurants are common near the temples and the museum quarter.

Getting in and around
Taipei Main Station is the hub: Red line to Tamsui and Shilin, Blue line to Ximen and the east, and the Taoyuan airport MRT for TPE. The Green (Songshan-Xindian) line runs through the south of the district from Ximen to Gongguan and on to Xindian, serving CKS Memorial Hall and NTU.
Most of the district is walkable. Taipei Main Station to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is about 20 minutes on foot, or two stops by MRT. 228 Peace Park and the National Taiwan Museum are 5–10 minutes from the station on foot.
Buses fill the gaps and YouBike stations are everywhere, though the main roads are heavy with traffic at rush hour. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap for short hops; the meter starts around NT$85 (2026 estimate, check).
