Family fun

What works with kids, by age band.

  • Taipei is easy with children: clean toilets and nursing rooms in MRT stations and department stores, priority seats on the MRT, and food that kids like (dumplings, noodles, tea, sweet potato). The MRT is free for children under 6 and half price for older kids with a child EasyCard.
  • Strollers work on the MRT and in malls but not on the narrow pavements of older streets; carry a light, folding one and a carrier.
  • Free or cheap stops: Da’an Forest Park playground, the Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, the Museum of Drinking Water and the Taipei Zoo with its panda house (check hours; the zoo is closed on some Mondays).
  • Maokong gondola with its glass-bottom cars and Beitou’s hot spring museum are easy half-day trips for children.
  • Night markets are noisy and crowded; go early (17:30) and hold hands. Food is usually fine but check spice levels.
  • In summer, plan an indoor midday break; children overheat quickly in 34 °C and 80% humidity.
