Step by step: how to build the plan
Step 1: fix the permit date. Gorilla permits sell out for peak months (Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb), so book the trek before you book flights. Everything else moves around that morning.
Step 2: count nights, not days. Arrival and departure days are mostly transfers. A 7-day trip is really 6 usable days, and one of them is the trek.
Step 3: choose one park beyond Volcanoes. Akagera (east, savanna, big five) or Nyungwe (southwest, chimpanzees, canopy walk). Doing both needs 10 days or more.
Step 4: put Lake Kivu between parks, not at the end. Gisenyi (Rubavu) or Kibuye (Karongi) breaks the drive and gives you a rest day.
Step 5: keep the last night in Kigali if your flight leaves before midday. The drive from Musanze or Nyungwe is long and the road can be slow.
Step 6: check the calendar for the last Saturday morning of the month. Umuganda (community work) closes some roads and services; do not plan a transfer then.

1 week: gorillas and savanna
Days 1–2: Kigali. Genocide Memorial, Kandt House, Kimironko market, Inema Arts Center. Go to the memorial early in the trip and leave time afterwards.
Day 3: drive to Volcanoes National Park. Afternoon at the Gorilla Guardians village or rest; trek briefings are early.
Day 4: gorilla trek. Day 5: golden monkeys or Mount Bisoke hike, or a second gorilla trek if you booked one.
Day 6: drive back through Kigali and on to Akagera. Afternoon game drive.
Day 7: morning game drive and the Lake Ihema boat trip, then return to Kigali for the flight. This is tight; a night flight or an extra night helps.

2 weeks: full Rwanda
Days 1–2: Kigali. Days 3–4: Akagera, with a night at the lake. Day 5: back through Kigali and north to Volcanoes.
Days 6–8: Volcanoes National Park. Gorillas, then golden monkeys or Bisoke, then a rest day.
Days 9–11: Lake Kivu. Drive to Gisenyi (Rubavu) and take the lakeshore road south to Kibuye. Boat trips to the islands, swimming, coffee washing stations.
Days 12–13: Nyungwe. Chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walk, tea fields. Book chimp permits ahead in peak season.
Day 14: drive to Huye for the Ethnographic Museum and Nyanza's King's Palace, then Kigali. If time is short, skip Huye and drive straight back.
- Add Uganda's Bwindi via Cyanika instead of Akagera for a second gorilla trek.
- The Congo Nile Trail runs along Lake Kivu; a 2–3 day section fits inside this route.
- Nyungwe is wetter than the east; pack a rain shell even in the dry season.
3 weeks: add the slow parts
Three weeks lets you stop moving. Take the 14-day route and add 5–7 nights on a Congo Nile Trail section, walking or cycling between Gisenyi and Kibuye with guesthouses along the way.
Alternatives: a second gorilla trek in Volcanoes or across the border in Uganda's Bwindi; more time in Akagera for the northern lakes; or a longer stay in Kigali to work or volunteer.
If you add Uganda or Tanzania, plan the border crossing as a full day. Buses and shared taxis between Kigali and Kampala or Kigali and the Tanzanian border take most of a day.

Distances in Rwanda are short but roads are hilly and slow. Do not stack two long drives on the same day.
