Choosing your dates, step by step
Start with the gorilla permit, not the flight. July–August sells out months ahead, so pick your trek date first and build the trip around it. If your dates are flexible, the same trek in May or November costs the same permit but comes with quieter trails and, in some lodges, lower rates.
Then match the region. Volcanoes National Park is high and cold in the morning, with mud in March–May and October–November; the central plateau around Kigali and Huye is mild year-round; Nyungwe is rainforest and wet most of the year, driest June–August; Akagera in the east is lower and warmer, and the dry season concentrates animals at the lakes.
Then check the calendar. 7 April starts Kwibuka, the 100-day commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi: the first week is solemn, music and events are muted and some businesses close. Umuganda, the monthly community work morning on the last Saturday, stops traffic and shuts shops until about midday — plan travel around it.

Rain in Rwanda rarely means all day, and the wet months are when the hills are greenest (check). Pack a rain shell, waterproof boots and layers for cold mornings at altitude whatever month you choose.
