Rwanda
Best places to visit in Rwanda: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, the best places are Kigali (2 nights), Volcanoes National Park (2–3 nights, one gorilla trek), then Akagera for savanna or Nyungwe for chimpanzees if you have a week. Lake Kivu and Huye fill a longer route. Skip a park if your permit date is fixed and your trip is under five days.

Summary table: places, nights and who they suit
Distances in Rwanda are short but roads are slow and hilly. The table below ranks the main stops for a first or second trip; the gorilla permit date decides the order of everything else.
| Place | Nights | Best months | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volcanoes National Park | 2–3 | Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb | First trip; gorillas and golden monkeys |
| Kigali | 2 | All year | Everyone; start and end here |
| Akagera | 2 | Jun–Sep | Big five, boat safaris, shorter trips |
| Nyungwe | 2 | Jun–Aug | Chimpanzees, canopy walk, hikers |
| Lake Kivu (Gisenyi or Kibuye) | 1–2 | Jun–Sep | Rest days between parks |
| Congo Nile Trail | 5–10 | Jun–Sep | Fit hikers and cyclists with time |
| Huye and Nyanza | 1 | All year | Museums, royal history, en route south |
Nights are a planning guide, not a rule. Dry-season months are the usual advice; expect rain at any time of year (check).
The places, step by step
Volcanoes National Park, based in Musanze, is the reason most people come. One gorilla trek takes a full morning: briefing early, then a walk of one to several hours depending on where the family moved that day. Add golden monkeys or a Bisoke hike the next day. Two or three nights is enough; more only if you are trekking twice.
Kigali deserves two nights, not one. The Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum are the two stops most visitors remember, and both are better early in the trip with time to decompress afterwards. Kimironko market, Kandt House and Inema Arts Center fill the rest. Motos and taxis cover the hills; walking is safe but steep.
Akagera, in the east, is a savanna park with the big five and a sunset boat trip on Lake Ihema that is the easiest way to see hippos and waterbirds. Two nights inside or just outside the park works. Nyungwe, in the southwest, is rainforest: chimpanzee tracking, colobus monkeys and a canopy walkway, best in the Jun–Aug dry window.
Lake Kivu splits the parks. Gisenyi (Rubavu) is a beach town opposite Goma and the northern start of the Congo Nile Trail; Kibuye (Karongi) is quieter, with boat trips to the islands. One or two nights here is a rest, not a sightseeing stop.
Huye (Butare) holds the Ethnographic Museum and makes a natural overnight on the road south, with the reconstructed King's Palace at Nyanza nearby. The Congo Nile Trail, a multi-day hike or bike along the lake, needs five to ten nights and reasonable fitness.
Notes before you book
Book the gorilla permit first. At about US$1,500 (2026 estimate) it is the single largest cost, and the date you get dictates your route, your nights and your flights. Everything else can move.
Rwanda is compact: Kigali to Musanze is roughly 2.5 hours by road, and the lakeshore road south from Gisenyi to Kibuye and on to Nyungwe is slow but scenic. Avoid the last Saturday morning of the month for transfers, when monthly community work closes roads to traffic.
Most passports get a visa on arrival, and Commonwealth, African Union and Francophonie citizens pay nothing, but confirm your own case before flying. Travel insurance matters here: gorilla trekking, hiking and cycling are the activities most likely to be excluded from a standard policy.
- Book the permit, then flights, then lodges.
- Two nights minimum in Kigali; one is too rushed.
- Keep one buffer day before your flight home.
- Check current park fees and permit rules directly with Rwanda Development Board (check).
Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in Rwanda?
Volcanoes National Park for gorillas, Kigali for the Genocide Memorial and markets, Lake Kivu for rest, Nyungwe for chimpanzees and Akagera for savanna. Huye and Nyanza add museums and royal history on a longer route.
How many days do you need in Rwanda?
Five days covers Kigali and one gorilla trek. Seven to ten days adds Akagera or Nyungwe and a night on Lake Kivu. Fourteen days allows the full loop with Huye and the Congo Nile Trail.
Which areas of Rwanda suit a first visit?
Kigali plus Volcanoes National Park. Add Akagera if you want savanna and big five, or Nyungwe if you want rainforest and chimpanzees. Lake Kivu is a rest stop, not a first-trip priority.
Do I need to book the gorilla permit in advance?
Yes. Permits are limited per day and cost about US$1,500 (2026 estimate). Book before flights, because the permit date fixes the whole route. Confirm current rules with the Rwanda Development Board (check).
When is the best time to visit Rwanda?
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, give easier trekking and better wildlife viewing. June to August is the usual window for Nyungwe. Rain is possible year-round (check).
Is Rwanda expensive to visit?
The gorilla permit dominates the budget at about US$1,500 (2026 estimate). Outside that, lodging, food and transport are moderate by regional standards. See the cost page for a full breakdown.
