How to get to Rwanda: airports, flights and border crossings
Fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL) — it is Rwanda's only international gateway with scheduled passenger flights, about 15 minutes from the city centre. Direct flights run from Doha, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Amsterdam, Brussels, Istanbul and Johannesburg; from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or NZ you connect once. Land borders from Uganda, Tanzania and the DRC work too, but road transfers are long.

By air: Kigali International Airport
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the only airport in Rwanda with scheduled international passenger service, so every fly-in trip starts here. It sits at Kanombe, about 10–15 km east of central Kigali — roughly 15–25 minutes by car outside rush hour, longer in the morning and evening peaks.
The terminal is small and quick to clear. Most travellers arrive on a connecting flight through a regional hub rather than a nonstop from home. Airlines serving Kigali include RwandAir (the national carrier), Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM, Brussels Airlines and several others — confirm current routes and frequencies before booking, as schedules change.
Taxis and ride-hailing (Yego, the local app) meet arrivals; agree the fare or use the app before you leave the terminal. Some hotels and lodges include an airport transfer — worth asking when you book.

By land: borders from Uganda, Tanzania and the DRC
Rwanda is landlocked and has no port, so arrival by sea is not possible. Overland entry works from three neighbours, and the main crossings are busy but generally straightforward for travellers with the right visa.
From Uganda, the main crossing is at Gatuna/Katuna on the road between Kampala and Kigali — a long day by bus, roughly 8–10 hours. From Tanzania, the Rusumo crossing links to the road from Kigali toward Lake Victoria and on to Mwanza; this is a long, two-day overland route for most travellers. From the DRC, the border at Rubavu (Gisenyi) opposite Goma is used mainly by people already in the region.
Buses and minibuses run between Kigali and Kampala, and between Kigali and the Tanzanian border towns. Book seats ahead in high season. Have your passport, visa (or visa-on-arrival eligibility) and, if you are coming from a yellow-fever risk country, a yellow-fever vaccination certificate ready at the border.
| Neighbour | Main crossing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Uganda | Gatuna / Katuna | Kampala–Kigali bus, ~8–10 h; busiest route |
| Tanzania | Rusumo | Long overland route via Mwanza; allow 2 days |
| DRC | Rubavu / Goma | For travellers already in the region; check security advice |

Entry rules and what to have ready
Most passports can get a visa on arrival in Rwanda, and citizens of Commonwealth, African Union and Francophonie countries pay nothing — but rules and fees are set by the Rwandan government and can change, so confirm before you fly. Carry a passport valid for at least six months, proof of onward travel and a yellow-fever certificate if you are arriving from a country with yellow-fever risk.
If you are combining Rwanda with Uganda or the DRC for gorilla trekking, check whether you need a multiple-entry visa or a separate one for each country. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth arranging before you leave, especially if you plan to trek.
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Visa or visa-on-arrival eligibility confirmed
- Yellow-fever certificate if arriving from a risk country
- Proof of onward travel
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover
Practical notes for arrival
Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc (RWF), roughly 1,400–1,500 per US$ — check the rate before you change money. ATMs and card payments work in Kigali and at larger hotels, but carry some cash for smaller towns, parks and tips. A local eSIM or SIM card is cheap and useful for maps and ride-hailing; buy one at the airport or in Kigali.
Kigali is compact and easy to navigate, but the parks are not: Volcanoes National Park is about 2.5 hours from the city, and Nyungwe and Akagera are further. Plan your arrival day to match your onward transfer, and book park permits and lodges before you book flights — gorilla permits in particular sell out months ahead.
Questions people ask
What is the best airport to fly into for Rwanda?
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the only practical international gateway for Rwanda. It is about 15 minutes from central Kigali and served by RwandAir, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM, Brussels Airlines and others, mostly via a regional or European hub.
How long is the flight to Rwanda from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?
There are no nonstops from these countries. From the US, expect 18–24 hours with one stop via Europe, Doha or Addis Ababa. From the UK, 9–13 hours with one stop. From Canada, 16–24 hours. From Australia or NZ, 20–30 hours with one or two stops.
Can I enter Rwanda by land or sea?
By land, yes: the main crossings are Gatuna/Katuna from Uganda, Rusumo from Tanzania and Rubavu/Goma from the DRC. By sea, no — Rwanda is landlocked and has no port, so there is no ferry or cruise arrival.
Do I need a visa to enter Rwanda?
Most passports can get a visa on arrival, and Commonwealth, African Union and Francophonie citizens pay nothing. Rules and fees are set by the Rwandan government and can change, so confirm your specific passport before you travel.
How do I get from Kigali airport to the city?
Taxis and ride-hailing apps (such as Yego) meet arrivals; the trip to central Kigali takes about 15–25 minutes depending on traffic. Agree the fare or book through the app, and ask your hotel whether an airport transfer is included.
Is it cheaper to fly into a neighbouring country and cross by land?
Sometimes, if you are already travelling in Uganda or Tanzania. But the overland routes are long — Kampala to Kigali is roughly 8–10 hours by bus — so compare the total time and cost against a connecting flight to Kigali before deciding.
