Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Đà Nẵng is a modern, spread-out city with one walkable centre on the Hàn River, a 10 km city beach and the airport between them. Its sights are short visits separated by car rides, and the sea decides the season: calm and warm from February to August, rough with rip currents and typhoons from September to December. Trips go wrong when a beach week is booked in November, when the Marble Mountains are climbed at noon, or when the Hội An transfer is left to a kerbside driver at midnight.

Fits

  • Beach holidays with a city attached
  • Families
  • Travellers basing themselves for Hội An and Huế
  • Late arrivals
  • Seafood lovers

Does not fit

  • Travellers after old streets on foot (sleep in Hội An)
  • Beach trips in October–December
  • Nightlife hunters
  • Anyone who wants to walk between sights

Don't confuse
Đà Nẵng city now includes Hội An: since July 2025 Quảng Nam province is part of Đà Nẵng. Hội An is still a separate town 30 km south, and this page covers the old city only. Mỹ Khê is the beach once called 'China Beach'; the name is also used for the beaches further south.

Only the history you meet on the ground
  1. 01Đà Nẵng (Tourane to the French) is the deep-water port of the central coast. The Hải Vân Pass to the north walls it off from Huế, which is why the weather and even the accent change over the ridge.
  2. 02US Marines landed here in March 1965, the first American combat troops of the war; the air base became one of the busiest in the world. The city grew fast after 2000 under ambitious local planning: bridges, beach roads and towers.
  3. 03In July 2025 Đà Nẵng absorbed Quảng Nam province, so Hội An, Mỹ Sơn and the Cù Lao Chàm islands are now inside the city's borders. Signs and bookings may still show the old province (check).

More background

The city is organised along the river and the coast: the old centre on the west bank of the Hàn, the Sơn Trà peninsula to the north-east, and the beach strip running south to the Marble Mountains and on to Hội An. Almost every visitor day is a sequence of short car rides along that line.

The weather runs on the central coast's own calendar. The north-east monsoon brings most of the year's rain between September and December, with typhoons and floods in October and November, while February to August is dry and increasingly hot. Plans for the beach, boats, the pass and Bà Nà Hills all hang on that split.

Đà Nẵng has a reputation as one of the country's tidiest, most orderly cities: clean beaches, wide roads, well-run public spaces. It is quieter at night than Hanoi or Saigon, and many visitors find it an easy first stop. What it lacks is an old quarter to wander, which is why most people pair it with Hội An.

Tourist information

  • Official tourism portal: danangfantasticity.com, with event dates and the fireworks-festival schedule; information desks at the airport (check).
  • Hotels book Bà Nà Hills, Mỹ Sơn, Cù Lao Chàm and Huế transfers; compare with an app or an operator before paying.
  • Shopfronts signed 'Tourist Information' on the beach road are travel agencies, not official offices.

Addresses: official addresses use the post-2025 ward names, but everyone navigates by street and house number. On the central coast a lane is a "kiệt" and addresses often start with K: K23/4 Trần Kế Xương means house 4 in lane 23 off Trần Kế Xương street. Put the full string in the app.

Distances are short but not walkable in the heat: the centre to the beach is 3 km, the beach to the Marble Mountains 8 km, the centre to Linh Ứng Pagoda about 10 km. Budget ₫50,000–150,000 and 10–25 minutes for each hop. On weekend show nights, bridges near the Dragon Bridge jam from 20:30.

Da Nang travel FAQ

Short answers; details in the sections above

Answers are 2026 desk estimates; fares and rules marked (check) change.

Is Đà Nẵng worth staying in, or should I go straight to Hội An?

For a beach holiday, yes; for old streets, sleep in Hội An and visit Đà Nẵng's sights on the way. Many people do two nights in each.

When can I swim?

February to August in calm seas, between the flags; September to January is often rough, with red flags and rip currents.

How much is a taxi from the airport?

About ₫70,000–150,000 (≈ US$3–6) by Grab, Be or Xanh SM to the centre or the beach, 10–20 minutes.

How far is Hội An?

30 km, 40–50 minutes by car, about ₫300,000–450,000 (≈ US$12–18) (2026 estimate).

Is Bà Nà Hills worth it?

If the Golden Bridge photo matters and the day is clear; it is expensive, crowded and often foggy. Go on a weekday on the first cable cars.

When is the Dragon Bridge show?

Saturday and Sunday evenings, commonly 21:00, for about 15 minutes (check that week). Watch from the east bank.

Can I ride a motorbike over the Hải Vân Pass?

With the right licence and insurance, in dry weather; otherwise take an easy-rider or the train along the coast.

Is it typhoon season?

September to December is the risk window, peaking October–November. Keep a spare day and flexible bookings.

Is Đà Nẵng safe?

Yes for crime; the sea and traffic are the real risks. Keep the phone away from the road side and swim only where lifeguards are posted.

Do I need cash?

Some. Stalls, markets, sunbeds and small cafés are cash only; hotels, malls and ride-hailing take cards. Keep ₫300,000–500,000 (≈ US$12–20) in small notes.

Where should I stay?

Mỹ Khê for the beach and families, the Hàn River centre for one or two nights of food and sights, the south resort beach for a resort week.

Train or car to Huế?

The day train along the coast is scenic and cheap; a car can stop at the top of the pass and at Lăng Cô. Both take 2.5–3 h.

Can I see the monkeys on Sơn Trà?

Red-shanked douc langurs live in the forest; you may see them from the road in the early morning. Do not feed or approach them.

Is the tap water safe?

No. Drink bottled or filtered water; ice in established cafés is factory-made.

Are vapes allowed?

No. Vietnam banned the sale, import and use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco from 2025; do not pack them.

Working here

Tourist entry
E-visas allow up to 90 days; some nationalities enter visa-free for up to 45 days. Neither allows paid work, including paid volunteering.
Work permit
Legal work needs an employer-sponsored work permit and a temporary residence card; expect a degree, a criminal-record check and legalised documents.
Teaching English
Language centres hire with a degree and a TEFL certificate; salaries are quoted per hour. Avoid schools that promise to 'sort the visa later'.
Remote work
Many remote workers base here for the beach and prices, but Vietnam has no digital-nomad visa (check). Working for a foreign employer on a tourist visa is a grey area.

  • Fireworks-festival Saturdays: book months ahead and ask whether the river-view price applies.
  • The hotel must register your passport with police; it may photocopy it but should not keep it.
  • Storm season: choose flexible rates and a hotel with a generator (check).
  • Upmarket prices are often quoted '++' (plus service and VAT): compare final totals.

With kids

  • Mỹ Khê by a lifeguard post is the main event in calm months (February–August); stay in the shallows.
  • Marble Mountains caves suit school-age children; carry toddlers on the stairs.
  • Asia Park and the Sun Wheel make an easy evening; Bà Nà Hills' Fantasy Park fills a whole (expensive) day (check prices).
  • Level riverside and beach promenades work for strollers; pagodas and caves do not.
  • Ride-hailing cars rarely have child seats: ask the hotel to book one, or bring a travel booster.
  • Rain day: malls with play areas and cinemas (Vincom Plaza, Lotte Mart).

Markets, bargaining, cash
Bargaining
Bargain in Hàn and Cồn markets and at the Marble Mountains stone shops: counter at about half, settle around 60–70%. Fixed prices in malls, supermarkets and shops with printed tags; never haggle at food stalls with a posted menu.
Fixed-price check
Check dried seafood, coffee and fish-sauce prices at a supermarket (Co.opmart, WinMart, Lotte Mart) first. That is your ceiling.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Swim only between the flags at lifeguard posts.
  • Heat and UV: shade at noon, water hourly.
  • Emergency: 113 police, 114 fire, 115 ambulance.

Red lines

  • No swimming under red flags or after dark.
  • No motorbike riding over the Hải Vân Pass in rain or without the right licence.
  • Do not feed the monkeys on Sơn Trà.

Practical

  • Toilets: malls, hotels, beach access points (small fee).
  • Tap water is not for drinking.

Scams and red flags

Walk away if you see these

  • Seafood weighed out of sight or swapped after weighing: watch the scale and the tank.
  • Unmarked 'Hội An shuttle' drivers at the airport: book a car in an app or through the hotel.
  • Marble Mountains stone shops pressing for sales or claiming you must buy to park.
  • Beach sunbed 'free' until you order drinks at high prices: ask the price first.
  • The ₫20,000 (≈ under US$1) and ₫500,000 (≈ US$20) notes are both blue: count notes when paying and taking change.

Solo, women and LGBTQ+ travellers

Short and factual

Solo

  • Easy and safe; hostels in An Thượng are social and run group dinners and tours.
  • Easy-rider tours over the Hải Vân Pass are priced per bike, so solo travellers pay the same as a couple sharing two bikes.
  • Ride-hailing apps log driver and route: use them after dark.

Women

  • Low hassle; the usual care at night and on the dark stretches of beach.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for pagodas; swimwear on the beach only.
  • Women-only dorms exist in the larger hostels.

LGBTQ+

  • Same-sex relations are legal and Đà Nẵng is relaxed; public affection of any kind is low-key.
  • A small scene in An Thượng bars; nothing like Saigon's.
  • Same-sex marriage is not recognised; international chains do not query shared rooms.

Etiquette in Da Nang

What locals notice
Pagodas
Shoulders and knees covered; shoes off in halls; do not walk between worshippers and the altar.
Beach
Swimwear on the beach only; cover up in town, cafés and shops.
Fishing beach
Mân Thái is a workplace: stay out of the way of boats and trading, ask before close-up photos.
Tipping
Not expected at stalls; round up drivers; tip spa staff and guides directly.
Paying and haggling
Haggle in markets and stone shops with a smile; never at food stalls with a posted menu. Hand money over with the right hand or both hands.
Photos
Ask before photographing vendors, fishermen and worshippers up close; no drones over the airport, the port or military areas.
Wildlife
Do not feed or touch the douc langurs and macaques on Sơn Trà.
Voices and tempers
Raising your voice loses the argument: stay calm and walk away if a price will not move.

Đà Nẵng looks new, and most of it is: bridges, beach towers and a tidy riverfront built in a generation. Underneath sits a much older story of a sheltered bay behind a mountain wall, a Cham coast of temples and sculptors, a French concession, a vast American airbase and a city that planned its way to prosperity. This deep dive reads those layers so that a morning at the Cham Museum and an evening under the Dragon Bridge belong to the same place.

1History2 min

For a thousand years this coast belonged to Champa, a group of Indianised kingdoms whose people, the Cham, built brick temples to Shiva and Vishnu and traded along the South China Sea. Their religious centre was the valley of Mỹ Sơn and one of their royal cities was Trà Kiệu, both a short drive south of today's city. Champa's northern frontier was the Hải Vân range; as Vietnamese armies pushed south from the 11th century, the frontier moved with them, and after the fall of the Cham capital Vijaya in 1471 this stretch of coast became Vietnamese.

In the 17th and 18th centuries the region's great port was Hội An, where Japanese, Chinese and European ships traded under the Nguyễn lords. Đà Nẵng bay was the deep-water anchorage beside it. As Hội An's river silted, the bay took over, and in 1835 Emperor Minh Mạng ordered that Western ships could trade only here. The court also built the Điện Hải citadel in 1813 and a string of forts around the bay, a sign of how exposed it felt.

The exposure was real. On 1 September 1858 a French and Spanish fleet attacked the port, the opening move of the French conquest of Vietnam. The invaders were held on the beaches by disease and resistance and turned south to Saigon, but Đà Nẵng, renamed Tourane, became a French concession in 1888. Colonial Tourane was a small administrative and port town: a cathedral, villas along the river, warehouses and a museum built to hold Cham sculpture collected by French scholars.

The American war made it a military city. On 8 March 1965 US Marines came ashore north of the centre, the first US ground combat units sent to Vietnam, and the airfield became one of the busiest in the world. Hospitals, depots and bases spread along the beaches; soldiers on leave knew Mỹ Khê as China Beach. On 29 March 1975 the city fell to the North Vietnamese in the final offensive, amid a chaotic evacuation, and the date is still marked as its liberation day.

After years as part of Quảng Nam–Đà Nẵng province, the city was split off in 1997 and run directly by the central government. Its leaders used the status to rebuild: wide beach roads, new bridges over the Hàn, a new airport terminal, clean public beaches and strict order on the streets. Đà Nẵng hosted APEC in 2017. In July 2025 the national reorganisation merged Quảng Nam province back into it, so Hội An, Mỹ Sơn and the Cù Lao Chàm islands now lie inside the city's borders.

Hải Châu, on the west bank of the Hàn, is the old town in the sense that it is where the French and then the Republic of Vietnam built their offices, church and markets. Hàn Market sits at the river end of the old commercial streets, the cathedral a few steps south on Trần Phú, and the Cham Museum at the southern tip beside the Dragon Bridge. Bạch Đằng, the riverside road, was widened into a promenade in the 2000s, and it is now the city's evening walk.

Across the river, the east bank was sand, fishing villages and US bases until the bridges arrived. The Hàn River swing bridge of 2000, the Thuận Phước suspension bridge of 2009 and the Dragon Bridge of 2013 tied it to the centre, and the beach road filled with hotels. Behind Mỹ Khê the small streets of An Thượng became the visitors' quarter of cafés, bars and guesthouses, while the north end at Mân Thái and Thọ Quang is still a working fishing district.

The Sơn Trà peninsula closes the bay to the north-east. It was a military zone for decades, which kept much of its forest intact; today it is a nature reserve with a population of red-shanked douc langurs, a large pagoda with a 67 m statue of the bodhisattva Quan Âm facing the sea, and a few secluded resorts. The port of Tiên Sa on its sheltered side handles the city's container ships and cruise calls.

South along the coast, the five limestone hills of Ngũ Hành Sơn, the Marble Mountains, rise out of the sand. Each is named after one of the five elements, and the largest, Thủy Sơn, is riddled with caves that have held Buddhist and earlier shrines for centuries. The village of Non Nước at its foot has carved stone for generations. Beyond it, the old sandy road to Hội An has become a long corridor of resorts, golf courses and villa estates.

West and north, the city shades into workaday districts: Thanh Khê around the airport and railway, Liên Chiểu with industrial parks, universities and the fishing village of Nam Ô, famous for its anchovy fish sauce and a rocky beach at the foot of the Hải Vân road. Inland, Hòa Vang is rice fields, hot springs and the long road up to Bà Nà.

The oldest architecture you can see in the city is not a building but its fragments. The Cham Museum holds sandstone altars, pediments, lintels and statues from temples across the region, arranged by site: Mỹ Sơn, Trà Kiệu, Đồng Dương and others. The carvings show Hindu gods, dancing apsaras, lions, elephants and the Buddhist art of Đồng Dương, and they are the best way to picture the brick towers that stood on this coast.

The museum itself, opened in 1919, is the city's finest colonial building: open galleries in a French design with Cham-inspired details, built by the French School of the Far East to house its finds. The pink cathedral on Trần Phú, finished in 1923 with a single Gothic spire topped by a rooster weathervane, is the other colonial landmark. A few villas and offices of the period survive along Bạch Đằng and in Hải Châu, much altered.

Nguyễn-dynasty building survives in pieces too: the star-shaped Điện Hải citadel of 1813, restored in recent years; the Tam Thai pagoda on the Marble Mountains, rebuilt under Minh Mạng in 1825; and the Hải Vân gate at the top of the pass, fortified in 1826 with the inscription 'Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan', the most imposing pass under heaven.

The modern city is a showcase of bridges. The Dragon Bridge, a steel arch shaped like a dragon, opened on the liberation anniversary in 2013 and breathes fire and water on weekend nights. Around it, towers of hotels and apartments line the river and the beach, and the city's building rules have kept the riverfront open as a public promenade. Up in the hills, Bà Nà Hills' French-village replica and the Golden Bridge of 2018, held by two giant stone-look hands, are architecture as spectacle.

Đà Nẵng eats like Quảng Nam, the province that surrounded it for most of its history. The signature dish, mì Quảng, is named after it: wide rice noodles tinted with turmeric, a small amount of concentrated broth rather than a bowl of soup, pork, shrimp, chicken or even frog, with peanuts, herbs and a toasted sesame rice cracker broken over the top. It was the food of farm families and travellers, cheap and portable, and it is still breakfast and lunch for most of the city.

The sea sets the rest of the menu. Fish cakes go into bún chả cá, the morning noodle soup; anchovies become nước mắm in the vats of Nam Ô and mắm nêm, the thick fermented sauce that dresses bún mắm and the city's famous bánh tráng cuốn thịt heo, boiled pork and herbs rolled in rice paper at the table. Nam Ô is also known for gỏi cá, a raw fish salad, and the beach halls from Mân Thái to Mỹ Khê sell shellfish by the kilo from tanks.

Neighbours contribute too. From Huế come bún bò and the habit of small, many-dish meals; from Hội An, cao lầu and chicken rice; from the countryside of Quảng Nam, roasted veal, bê thui Cầu Mống, eaten wrapped in rice paper. Street snacks such as bánh bèo, tiny steamed rice cakes, and bánh xèo with nem lụi skewers are shared by the whole central coast, with local twists in the dipping sauces.

Café life is newer but intense. The riverside and An Thượng are lined with coffee shops, from low-stool corners serving strong cà phê sữa đá to chains famous for coconut coffee. Larue, the beer of the central coast, was first brewed in the French period and is still the default at seafood halls, where crates stack up by the table over a long evening.

5Festivals1 min

The coast's own festivals belong to the fishermen. In the first months of the lunar year, villages such as Mân Thái hold Cầu Ngư, whale-worship festivals: fishermen here revere the whale as a protector that carries sailors to shore, and the rites include processions, offerings, boat races and folk singing to open a safe season at sea. Dates are set village by village, so ask locally.

The largest religious festival is at the Marble Mountains, around the 19th day of the second lunar month, in honour of Quán Thế Âm, the bodhisattva of compassion. Pilgrims fill the caves and pagodas for several days, with processions, lanterns and performances at the foot of the hill. Buddha's birthday brings lanterns to Linh Ứng on Sơn Trà and the other pagodas.

The modern city added its own calendar. The Đà Nẵng International Fireworks Festival, first held in 2008, brings international teams to the Hàn River on summer nights and fills every hotel for the Saturdays it runs. Each weekend the Dragon Bridge's fire and water show draws crowds to both banks, and road races and triathlons use the beach road in spring.

Tết is quieter here than in Hanoi but follows the same rhythm: flower markets and a countdown on the riverside, then several days when stalls close and families visit pagodas and graves. Mid-Autumn brings lion dances to residential streets, and on 29 March, liberation day, flags line the river.

The beach sets the city's clock. From about 5:00 the sand at Mỹ Khê fills with swimmers, joggers and groups doing exercises before work, and by 8:00 most have gone. Midday is for shade, noodles and naps; the beach fills again from about 16:00 until dark. Visitors who follow the same rhythm avoid the heat and see the city at its most sociable.

Weather shapes the year. February to August is dry and increasingly hot, the season of beach days, snorkelling trips and domestic holidays. From September the north-east monsoon brings the rain, and October and November can bring typhoons and floods that close beaches, the pass and the islands. Locals prepare as a matter of routine: sandbags, shutters and a day indoors when a storm is forecast.

Đà Nẵng likes to present itself as orderly and liveable, and much of that is visible: clean beaches, few street touts, well-kept parks and a quieter night-time than Hanoi or Saigon. Rising property prices and tower hotels are the other side of the same story, and the fishing villages on the beach have shrunk as land has been redeveloped.

The 2025 merger with Quảng Nam made the city far larger on paper, taking in Hội An, mountain districts and islands. For visitors the practical change is in addresses and ward names; on the ground, Hội An remains its own old town, 30 km down the coast, and Đà Nẵng remains the airport, the beach and the bridges.
