Da NangĐà Nẵng

For a thousand years this coast belonged to Champa, a group of Indianised kingdoms whose people, the Cham, built brick temples to Shiva and Vishnu and traded along the South China Sea. Their religious centre was the valley of Mỹ Sơn and one of their royal cities was Trà Kiệu, both a short drive south of today's city. Champa's northern frontier was the Hải Vân range; as Vietnamese armies pushed south from the 11th century, the frontier moved with them, and after the fall of the Cham capital Vijaya in 1471 this stretch of coast became Vietnamese.

In the 17th and 18th centuries the region's great port was Hội An, where Japanese, Chinese and European ships traded under the Nguyễn lords. Đà Nẵng bay was the deep-water anchorage beside it. As Hội An's river silted, the bay took over, and in 1835 Emperor Minh Mạng ordered that Western ships could trade only here. The court also built the Điện Hải citadel in 1813 and a string of forts around the bay, a sign of how exposed it felt.

The exposure was real. On 1 September 1858 a French and Spanish fleet attacked the port, the opening move of the French conquest of Vietnam. The invaders were held on the beaches by disease and resistance and turned south to Saigon, but Đà Nẵng, renamed Tourane, became a French concession in 1888. Colonial Tourane was a small administrative and port town: a cathedral, villas along the river, warehouses and a museum built to hold Cham sculpture collected by French scholars.

The American war made it a military city. On 8 March 1965 US Marines came ashore north of the centre, the first US ground combat units sent to Vietnam, and the airfield became one of the busiest in the world. Hospitals, depots and bases spread along the beaches; soldiers on leave knew Mỹ Khê as China Beach. On 29 March 1975 the city fell to the North Vietnamese in the final offensive, amid a chaotic evacuation, and the date is still marked as its liberation day.

After years as part of Quảng Nam–Đà Nẵng province, the city was split off in 1997 and run directly by the central government. Its leaders used the status to rebuild: wide beach roads, new bridges over the Hàn, a new airport terminal, clean public beaches and strict order on the streets. Đà Nẵng hosted APEC in 2017. In July 2025 the national reorganisation merged Quảng Nam province back into it, so Hội An, Mỹ Sơn and the Cù Lao Chàm islands now lie inside the city's borders.

Hải Châu, on the west bank of the Hàn, is the old town in the sense that it is where the French and then the Republic of Vietnam built their offices, church and markets. Hàn Market sits at the river end of the old commercial streets, the cathedral a few steps south on Trần Phú, and the Cham Museum at the southern tip beside the Dragon Bridge. Bạch Đằng, the riverside road, was widened into a promenade in the 2000s, and it is now the city's evening walk.

Across the river, the east bank was sand, fishing villages and US bases until the bridges arrived. The Hàn River swing bridge of 2000, the Thuận Phước suspension bridge of 2009 and the Dragon Bridge of 2013 tied it to the centre, and the beach road filled with hotels. Behind Mỹ Khê the small streets of An Thượng became the visitors' quarter of cafés, bars and guesthouses, while the north end at Mân Thái and Thọ Quang is still a working fishing district.

The Sơn Trà peninsula closes the bay to the north-east. It was a military zone for decades, which kept much of its forest intact; today it is a nature reserve with a population of red-shanked douc langurs, a large pagoda with a 67 m statue of the bodhisattva Quan Âm facing the sea, and a few secluded resorts. The port of Tiên Sa on its sheltered side handles the city's container ships and cruise calls.

South along the coast, the five limestone hills of Ngũ Hành Sơn, the Marble Mountains, rise out of the sand. Each is named after one of the five elements, and the largest, Thủy Sơn, is riddled with caves that have held Buddhist and earlier shrines for centuries. The village of Non Nước at its foot has carved stone for generations. Beyond it, the old sandy road to Hội An has become a long corridor of resorts, golf courses and villa estates.

West and north, the city shades into workaday districts: Thanh Khê around the airport and railway, Liên Chiểu with industrial parks, universities and the fishing village of Nam Ô, famous for its anchovy fish sauce and a rocky beach at the foot of the Hải Vân road. Inland, Hòa Vang is rice fields, hot springs and the long road up to Bà Nà.

The oldest architecture you can see in the city is not a building but its fragments. The Cham Museum holds sandstone altars, pediments, lintels and statues from temples across the region, arranged by site: Mỹ Sơn, Trà Kiệu, Đồng Dương and others. The carvings show Hindu gods, dancing apsaras, lions, elephants and the Buddhist art of Đồng Dương, and they are the best way to picture the brick towers that stood on this coast.

The museum itself, opened in 1919, is the city's finest colonial building: open galleries in a French design with Cham-inspired details, built by the French School of the Far East to house its finds. The pink cathedral on Trần Phú, finished in 1923 with a single Gothic spire topped by a rooster weathervane, is the other colonial landmark. A few villas and offices of the period survive along Bạch Đằng and in Hải Châu, much altered.

Nguyễn-dynasty building survives in pieces too: the star-shaped Điện Hải citadel of 1813, restored in recent years; the Tam Thai pagoda on the Marble Mountains, rebuilt under Minh Mạng in 1825; and the Hải Vân gate at the top of the pass, fortified in 1826 with the inscription 'Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan', the most imposing pass under heaven.

The modern city is a showcase of bridges. The Dragon Bridge, a steel arch shaped like a dragon, opened on the liberation anniversary in 2013 and breathes fire and water on weekend nights. Around it, towers of hotels and apartments line the river and the beach, and the city's building rules have kept the riverfront open as a public promenade. Up in the hills, Bà Nà Hills' French-village replica and the Golden Bridge of 2018, held by two giant stone-look hands, are architecture as spectacle.

Đà Nẵng eats like Quảng Nam, the province that surrounded it for most of its history. The signature dish, mì Quảng, is named after it: wide rice noodles tinted with turmeric, a small amount of concentrated broth rather than a bowl of soup, pork, shrimp, chicken or even frog, with peanuts, herbs and a toasted sesame rice cracker broken over the top. It was the food of farm families and travellers, cheap and portable, and it is still breakfast and lunch for most of the city.

The sea sets the rest of the menu. Fish cakes go into bún chả cá, the morning noodle soup; anchovies become nước mắm in the vats of Nam Ô and mắm nêm, the thick fermented sauce that dresses bún mắm and the city's famous bánh tráng cuốn thịt heo, boiled pork and herbs rolled in rice paper at the table. Nam Ô is also known for gỏi cá, a raw fish salad, and the beach halls from Mân Thái to Mỹ Khê sell shellfish by the kilo from tanks.

Neighbours contribute too. From Huế come bún bò and the habit of small, many-dish meals; from Hội An, cao lầu and chicken rice; from the countryside of Quảng Nam, roasted veal, bê thui Cầu Mống, eaten wrapped in rice paper. Street snacks such as bánh bèo, tiny steamed rice cakes, and bánh xèo with nem lụi skewers are shared by the whole central coast, with local twists in the dipping sauces.

Café life is newer but intense. The riverside and An Thượng are lined with coffee shops, from low-stool corners serving strong cà phê sữa đá to chains famous for coconut coffee. Larue, the beer of the central coast, was first brewed in the French period and is still the default at seafood halls, where crates stack up by the table over a long evening.

The coast's own festivals belong to the fishermen. In the first months of the lunar year, villages such as Mân Thái hold Cầu Ngư, whale-worship festivals: fishermen here revere the whale as a protector that carries sailors to shore, and the rites include processions, offerings, boat races and folk singing to open a safe season at sea. Dates are set village by village, so ask locally.

The largest religious festival is at the Marble Mountains, around the 19th day of the second lunar month, in honour of Quán Thế Âm, the bodhisattva of compassion. Pilgrims fill the caves and pagodas for several days, with processions, lanterns and performances at the foot of the hill. Buddha's birthday brings lanterns to Linh Ứng on Sơn Trà and the other pagodas.

The modern city added its own calendar. The Đà Nẵng International Fireworks Festival, first held in 2008, brings international teams to the Hàn River on summer nights and fills every hotel for the Saturdays it runs. Each weekend the Dragon Bridge's fire and water show draws crowds to both banks, and road races and triathlons use the beach road in spring.

Tết is quieter here than in Hanoi but follows the same rhythm: flower markets and a countdown on the riverside, then several days when stalls close and families visit pagodas and graves. Mid-Autumn brings lion dances to residential streets, and on 29 March, liberation day, flags line the river.

The beach sets the city's clock. From about 5:00 the sand at Mỹ Khê fills with swimmers, joggers and groups doing exercises before work, and by 8:00 most have gone. Midday is for shade, noodles and naps; the beach fills again from about 16:00 until dark. Visitors who follow the same rhythm avoid the heat and see the city at its most sociable.

Weather shapes the year. February to August is dry and increasingly hot, the season of beach days, snorkelling trips and domestic holidays. From September the north-east monsoon brings the rain, and October and November can bring typhoons and floods that close beaches, the pass and the islands. Locals prepare as a matter of routine: sandbags, shutters and a day indoors when a storm is forecast.

Đà Nẵng likes to present itself as orderly and liveable, and much of that is visible: clean beaches, few street touts, well-kept parks and a quieter night-time than Hanoi or Saigon. Rising property prices and tower hotels are the other side of the same story, and the fishing villages on the beach have shrunk as land has been redeveloped.

The 2025 merger with Quảng Nam made the city far larger on paper, taking in Hội An, mountain districts and islands. For visitors the practical change is in addresses and ward names; on the ground, Hội An remains its own old town, 30 km down the coast, and Đà Nẵng remains the airport, the beach and the bridges.
