Tábor

Give Tábor one night, or a half-day stop between Prague and České Budějovice: the old town is 2–3 hours, the underground adds an hour.

Tábor is a hilltop Hussite town 100 km south of Prague, ringed by the Lužnice river and Jordán lake. The old town is compact and walkable in an afternoon, but the evening light on Žižka Square and an easy train link make one night the better buy. It works as a stop on the Prague–České Budějovice line rather than a destination in itself.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
  • Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

Getting around

The old town is small enough to walk; the station is 1.2 km from Žižka Square, about 15 min on foot or a short city bus ride. Local buses cover the rest of town; the lake path is a pleasant alternative to the road.

Watch out

Safety

Tábor is a low-risk town. Watch the cobbles and the dark riverside paths at night, and ask prices before you sit down in bars with no posted menu.
  • Kotnov Tower and some smaller sights close from October to April.
  • The Hussite Museum and underground run shorter hours in winter; check before you go.
  • Some restaurants and bars post no prices: ask the total before you order.
  • Old-town streets are cobbled and steep in places; wear shoes with grip.
