Use Progreso as a beach day from Mérida, not a base: 30 min by car, buses every 10 min, one night only if you want the malecón at sunset.
Progreso is Mérida's beach: a working port 30 minutes north on Federal Highway 261, with a 6 km pier, a long malecón and cheap seafood. Most travellers come for the day. A night makes sense if you want the beach before the Mérida buses arrive and after they leave.

The centre and malecón are walkable. Colectivos and taxis cover the beach strip and Chicxulub Puerto. Buses from Mérida run about every 10 min, 05:15–22:15 or later; the trip takes about 55 min.

Safety
- Cruise-ship days flood the malecón and market: check the port schedule before you go for a quiet beach.
- Seaweed (sargazo) can pile up on the sand in summer; ask before booking a beachfront week.
- The pier is a working port and entry is restricted by law — do not count on walking it.
- Swim near other people; currents on the Gulf coast are not lifeguarded everywhere.
