Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost coastal town, majority ethnic Albanian, with an Ottoman old town on a hill and the country's longest sand beach, Velika Plaža, running 12 km to Ada Bojana. It is a beach-and-food town, not a sightseeing town: two or three nights covers the old town, the beach and Ada Bojana, and it pairs naturally with Shkodra in Albania. Most of the coast's visitors never come this far south, so prices and crowds are lower than Budva in July and August.

Getting around

The centre and old town are walkable, but the town is hilly and some lanes have no pavement: keep to the dry side when it rains and step aside for cars. Local minibuses run from Skenderbeu Ave (also near Palma restaurant) to Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana when at least three passengers are going. Taxis from the bus station to the old town cost €3–5.

Watch out

Safety

Ulcinj is a low-crime beach town; the real risks are fast cars on unlit lanes, slippery hills after rain, and unlicensed rooms or fish billed by raw weight — agree prices first.
  • Hilly lanes are slippery when wet and cars drive fast; walk facing traffic where there is no pavement.
  • Fish is priced per kilo of raw fish, and cleaned weight is far less than what you pay for: ask the price per kg before ordering.
  • Pork is rare — most restaurants here serve halal food.
  • Private rooms are often unlicensed; agree the total price and check the room before paying.
  • Ada Bojana charges about €6 (≈ US$7) per day for beach access.
