Northwest New Mexico is high-desert country with no big city and no rail spine beyond one Amtrak stop. You drive. Farmington and Gallup are the two practical bases — Farmington for the Four Corners corner, Shiprock and Chaco, Gallup on I-40 for El Malpais, El Morro and Zuni (base suitability: check). Two nights is a rushed loop; three to four lets you give Chaco and El Malpais a full day each without night driving on reservation roads.
