Southwest New Mexico is basin-and-range desert, the Rio Grande valley and the Gila Wilderness. Las Cruces is the only real city and the practical base for the Organ Mountains, Mesilla and Hatch; Silver City is the base for the Gila and the cliff dwellings. Between them are long, empty drives with few services, so pick one or two bases and accept the distances. Public transport exists only in Las Cruces; everywhere else you need a car.
