Mönchengladbach is a 262,000-person city on the Lower Rhine that behaves like a large town: one football club, one contemporary art museum, two moated castles and a small Altstadt. There is no tram or metro, buses stop around 20:00 and there are none after 23:00, so plan around the two main stations and treat Cologne and Düsseldorf as your big-city backup. Come for a match day, the Abteiberg collection, or as a cheaper bed between the Rhine cities.

Getting around

No tram or metro: buses only, and they thin out badly. Buses start about 05:00 (09:00 Sundays), are of little use after 20:00 and stop by 23:00; a night bus runs Fri–Sat from the Altstadt until about 03:00. The centre is walkable; Rheydt and the outskirts are not. Taxis fill the gap and cost real money. Cycling works April–October only.

Safety

A calm, low-crime city; the real risks are the bus shutdown after 23:00, unlit park paths at night and match-day crowding on the special buses to Borussia-Park.
  • Buses stop around 23:00 and are impractical after 20:00: fix your return leg before dinner.
  • Two stations are both called Hauptbahnhof (Mönchengladbach Hbf and Rheydt Hbf): check which one your train uses.
  • Long-distance IC/ICE service is limited; most trips need a change in Düsseldorf, Duisburg or Cologne.
  • The Garzweiler open-pit mine is strictly off limits; viewpoints only, no entry.
