Southwestern Colorado is two trips in one: the San Juan mountain towns (Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Crested Butte) and the mesa-and-canyon country around Cortez and Mesa Verde. There is no train and no useful bus network, so a car is the whole plan. Sleep in Durango for the narrow-gauge railroad and Mesa Verde access, in Montrose or Ouray for the Million Dollar Highway, and treat Telluride and Crested Butte as separate ski bases 1.5–2.5 hours apart.
