North Central New Mexico is a high-desert region of two mountain ranges split by the Rio Grande, with Santa Fe at the south gate and Taos at the north. It is Georgia O'Keeffe country: red rock, adobe villages and Pueblo communities. Distances are short on the map but slow on the road, so pick one base and loop out. Sleep in Santa Fe for galleries, food and the airport run; sleep in Taos for the gorge, the pueblo and ski access. Everything else — Chimayó, Abiquiu, the High Road — is a half-day drive from one of those two.

Santa Fe and the Española valley: July and August bring afternoon monsoon thunderstorms; snow in town usually melts within a day.
