  • Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
  • Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
  • Vietnam ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal; lookalike sites charge extra.
  • Vietnam ↗Crossing streets: walk slowly and steadily; motorbikes flow around you — do not stop or run.
  • Vietnam ↗Carry Vietnamese đồng in small notes; many stalls and taxis are cash-only.

The north is one capital and a ring of trips: karst on the water (Hạ Long, Lan Hạ, Ninh Bình) two to three hours east and south, and mountains (Sa Pa, Hà Giang) five to seven hours north. Moving hotel every night wastes the mornings; the trips that work keep the Hanoi bed, travel light for one or two nights away, and put the mountains in the dry, clear months. Winters are cool and grey, summers hot with storms that cancel boats.

Hạ Long / Lan Hạ cruise packages

check

Include transfer, meals and kayaks; compare route (Hạ Long vs Lan Hạ vs Bái Tử Long) and weather-cancellation terms, not just the boat photos.

Sleeper bus vs night train to Lào Cai

check

Bus is faster (5.5–6.5 h) and goes to Sa Pa; the train is gentler but ends in Lào Cai, 1 h below Sa Pa.

Hà Giang loop packages

check

3–4 days with rider, beds and meals; check rider licensing, group size and whether the 'party' tours suit you.

The north is where the Vietnamese state was born and where it still governs from: the Red River delta's rice, the capital's thousand years, the karst seascapes of the coast and the mountains of the minority peoples along the Chinese and Lao borders. Five chapters on how the region fits together and how to travel it.

1The Red River delta1 min

The Red River (Sông Hồng) carries red-brown silt from Yunnan to the Gulf of Tonkin, and its delta is one of the most densely farmed landscapes on earth. Dikes, some a thousand years old, hold the river above the fields; villages sit on slightly higher ground, each with a communal house (đình) and a pagoda.

Hanoi grew on the river's right bank where the dikes and lakes made a defensible site. Most of what a visitor eats in the north — rice noodles, fish sauce, pork, herbs — comes from this plain, which is why the city's food is cheap and fresh.

The delta is also why winters feel raw: a flat, humid plain under grey monsoon cloud from December to March, with drizzle rather than rain.

2Karst on the water and on land1 min

A belt of limestone runs from southern China through the north: drowned by the sea it becomes Hạ Long, Bái Tử Long and Lan Hạ bays; on land it rises as the towers of Ninh Bình's Tràng An and Tam Cốc, and in the far north as the Đồng Văn plateau of Hà Giang.

The same rock explains the caves, the sheer cliffs and the absence of surface water on the plateau, where Hmong farmers plant maize in pockets of soil between stones. It also explains the travel pattern: every karst area is two to seven hours from Hanoi, and each is better with a night than as a day.

3Mountain peoples1 min

The mountains are home to many of Vietnam's 53 recognised minorities: Hmong, Red and Black Dao, Tày, Nùng, Thái, Giáy, Lô Lô and others, with their own languages, textiles and markets. Around Sa Pa and in Hà Giang, many villages now combine farming with homestays and guiding.

The fairest way to visit is through that local economy: a guide from the village you walk through, a homestay run by a family, handicrafts bought from adults. Markets such as Bắc Hà (Sunday) and Đồng Văn remain trading events first and sights second.

4A capital region1 min

The Lý dynasty moved the capital to Thăng Long (Hanoi) in 1010; for most of the next eight centuries the north was the political centre, fighting off Chinese and Mongol invasions — twice at the Bạch Đằng River near today's Hạ Long. The Nguyễn moved the court to Huế in 1802, and the French made Hanoi the capital of Indochina.

After 1954 the north became the Democratic Republic of Vietnam; Điện Biên Phủ in the far north-west was the battle that ended French rule. The American War brought bombing to Hanoi and Hải Phòng. Since 1976 Hanoi has been the capital of the unified country, and the north remains the seat of the Party and the state.

5How to travel the north1 min

Keep one bed in Hanoi and make trips from it. The water-karst trips (Ninh Bình, Hạ Long or Lan Hạ) are two to three hours away; the mountains (Sa Pa, Hà Giang) five to seven. Link the mountains in one loop rather than two out-and-back trips.

Weather sets the order: October–November suits everything; March–May is second best; summer brings storms that cancel cruises and landslides that close mountain roads; winter brings fog and cold to the mountains. Keep a spare day before any international flight.
