The bay is 2.5 hours from Hanoi by expressway, so a day trip is roughly five hours on the road for four on the water. One night aboard turns that ratio around. The core Hạ Long routes carry most of the boats; Lan Hạ (from Hải Phòng or Cát Bà) and Bái Tử Long (north-east) trade a longer transfer for fewer boats and calmer kayaking. Storms close the harbour at short notice from June to October, so the cruise never goes on the day before your flight out.

Traps

Touts at the pier selling "the same boat, cheaper": pay only the operator or your booked agent.
"Deluxe" and "luxury" are not a grade: the same boat is sold under several agency names at different prices. Compare by boat name.
Photos of a newer sister ship; ask for the boat name and check recent reviews of that boat.
Cheap day tours that stop at a pearl farm or craft shop and spend more time in the van than on the water.
"Transfer included" meaning a public bus to Bãi Cháy, not a hotel pickup.

Cancellation protocol

When the bay closes

1Watch. From two days out, check the forecast; storms and strong winds make the Quảng Ninh port authority suspend departures, often decided the evening before or that morning.
2Call. If the operator has not contacted you by 18:00 the day before, call the hotline and ask whether the boat is cleared to sail.
3Choose. Options are usually a full refund, a new date, or a land tour. Do not accept the land tour by default; ask for the refund in writing.
4Mid-cruise. If the boat is recalled, expect to return to the pier early; the refund for unused time follows the written policy — another reason to get it before paying.
5Buffer. Never book the cruise for the day before an international flight from HAN; keep one spare day after it.
6Insurance. Storm claims need the operator's written cancellation notice; ask for it by message or email on the day.
