Cát Bà is the largest island of the Hạ Long–Cát Bà karst, now in the same UNESCO site (2023). Its town is a strip of hotels on a harbour; the draw is Lan Hạ Bay's lagoons and beaches by boat or kayak, a forested national park with the langur conservation area, and wartime caves. It is part of Hải Phòng city.

The Cát Bà archipelago has more than 300 limestone islands; Lan Hạ Bay lies east of the main island. UNESCO added it to the Hạ Long Bay site in 2023.

The golden-headed Cát Bà langur is one of the world's rarest primates, with only dozens left in the wild; a conservation project protects them in the park's core.

During the American War a multi-level hospital was built inside a cave to shelter from bombing of Hải Phòng. It is open to visitors with a guide.
