The loop is roughly 350 km of mountain road through the Đồng Văn karst plateau (a UNESCO Global Geopark) on the Chinese border: switchbacks, Hmong markets, stone-walled villages and the Mã Pí Lèng pass above the Nho Quế river. It became northern Vietnam's backpacker rite; the risk is the road. Most visitors now ride pillion behind a local rider ('easy-rider'); since 2025 the area is part of Tuyên Quang province (check).

1The Đồng Văn plateau1 min
The loop crosses the Đồng Văn karst plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2010: grey limestone ridges above 1,000 m, deep canyons such as the Nho Quế, and fossils from ancient seas.

2The Hmong world1 min
Most of the plateau is Hmong, with Lô Lô, Dao, Tày and others. Families farm maize in rock pockets; markets rotate weekly. The Vương family mansion at Sà Phìn recalls a Hmong clan that controlled the opium trade under the French.

3The Happiness Road1 min
The Mã Pí Lèng stretch was cut by hand by young volunteers from 1959 to 1965 and named Con đường Hạnh Phúc — the Happiness Road. It opened the plateau to the lowlands.

4Riding it well1 min
Ride with a licensed local rider unless you are qualified; start early, stop before dark, and avoid fog and heavy rain. Spend money in homestays and markets, and treat the loop as a place people live, not a party route.
