The far north has two mountain regions most visitors want — Sa Pa's terraces and Hà Giang's karst passes — and both are 5–7 hours from Hanoi. Doing them as two separate out-and-back trips costs two extra long days; linking them across the mountains (Sa Pa → Hà Giang, 6–7 hours by car or a daily van) saves one. The loop only works in the dry, clear months: fog in winter and landslides in summer take away the views that are the point.

Prepare
- Motorbike licence rules: ride pillion unless you hold the right licence and insurance.
- Warm layers and rain gear in every season.
- Cash: few ATMs on the loop (Yên Minh, Đồng Văn, Mèo Vạc).
- Border-area permit for Hà Giang — arranged by operators (check current rules).

1Two mountain worlds1 min
Sa Pa sits on the Hoàng Liên range with Fansipan above; its valleys are terraced for rice. Hà Giang's plateau is limestone with maize and stone walls. Linking them shows both faces of the north.
2The crossing1 min
The road from Sa Pa via Bắc Hà and Xín Mần to Hà Giang is one of the least-travelled links in the north; a car or daily van takes 6–7 hours and saves a return to Hanoi.
3The season1 min
Rice harvest gold in late September, buckwheat flowers in October–November, blossom in March. Summer rains and winter fog are the reasons to plan by month.
