North Vancouver Island is the wild top of the island: old-growth forest, orca and grizzly tours, and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw cultural sites. It is not a place you pass through — it is a 4.5–5 hour drive from Nanaimo on Highway 19, and most of it has no cell service. Come for 3–4 nights, sleep in Port McNeill or Port Hardy, and book wildlife tours ahead. Skip it if you have less than three days or no car.
