Central Vancouver Island runs from Nanaimo north to Campbell River, with the west-coast surf towns of Tofino and Ucluelet across the mountains. The east side (Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Comox, Campbell River) is connected by Highway 19 and BC Transit buses; the west side is a separate run on Highway 4 from Port Alberni. Pick one side as your base unless you have a car and 4+ nights.
