Ucluelet is a small working harbour town on the west coast of Vancouver Island, 40 km south of Tofino and 8 km off Highway 4. It has no surf beach in town, but it sits next to the Long Beach section of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and the Wild Pacific Trail, and beds cost less than in Tofino in summer. Two nights covers the trail, the aquarium and one boat trip; three if you add a surf day.

Getting around

The town centre is small enough to walk, and the Wild Pacific Trail starts at the edge of town. A car is the practical way to reach Long Beach, Tofino and the trailheads on Highway 4. BC Transit (West Coast Transit) runs a daily bus between Ucluelet and Tofino; taxis are limited, so book ahead. Bikes and e-bikes can be rented in town, and a 25 km multi-use trail links Ucluelet and Tofino through the national park.

Watch out

Safety

Ucluelet is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are natural: cold water, rogue waves on the rocks, wet twisty roads and fast-changing coastal weather. Tell someone your trail plan and carry rain gear.
  • Highway 4 west of Port Alberni is twisty and narrow with few passing lanes: drive it in daylight and allow extra time.
  • Rain falls in every month, including 80–90 mm on average in July and August; bring a waterproof shell and a warm layer even in summer.
  • Morning fog in summer can sit until late in the day.
  • Do not climb on the rocks near Amphitrite Point: waves can sweep people off.
  • Book summer beds and boat tours weeks ahead; Ucluelet fills up in July and August.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on parts of Highway 4 and on the coast; download offline maps.
