The Panhandle is 11 counties of short-grass plains, pine ridges and badlands on the far western edge of Nebraska, and it runs on Mountain Time — one hour behind the rest of the state. There is no rail or bus network worth planning around, so a car is the trip. Sleep in Scottsbluff for services and the monument, or in Chadron for the northwest sights; everything else is a drive of 30–90 minutes.

Distances are long and services thin: the drive from Scottsbluff to Chadron is about 100 miles with few stops. Carry water.
