Colorado splits down the middle: the Front Range cities (Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins) sit where the prairie meets the mountains, and everything west of them is mountain driving. Denver International (DEN) is one of the ten busiest airports in the world and the only practical gateway for most trips. Two nights in Denver or Boulder covers the city side; then choose one mountain base — Estes Park for Rocky Mountain National Park, Glenwood Springs or Grand Junction for the I-70 corridor, Durango or Cortez for Mesa Verde and the southwest. Trying to add Aspen, Telluride and the Sand Dunes to the same week means most of it goes to the windshield.
