Two landscapes, one loop. The Black Hills are forested mountains with the carved memorials, caves and Custer State Park; the Badlands are eroded cliffs an hour east on I-90. Rapid City sits between them and has the beds and the airport; Custer or Hill City put you closer to the scenic drives. A car is not optional — I-90 is the only interstate and most sights sit off two-lane roads.
