The Great Plains is grassland between the Rockies and the Midwest forests, and it is a driving region: the headline sights — Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the Black Hills — sit in southwestern South Dakota, hours from the next city. Fly into Rapid City, rent a car, and give the Black Hills 3–4 nights. Kansas City, Omaha, Oklahoma City and Tulsa are modest city stops, not the reason to come. Without a car, skip the region or limit yourself to one city.
