The High Plains is the northern three-quarters of the Texas Panhandle: flat, wheat-and-cattle country cut by I-40 and the old Route 66. Amarillo is the only place with a full range of beds, food and an airport; everything else is a town of a few thousand people with one museum, one café or one canyon. Come with a car, sleep in Amarillo or Canyon, and treat the small towns as half-day stops on the way between bigger places.
