Gering is the oldest of the Scottsbluff–Gering–Terrytown cluster on the North Platte, about 8,500 people and the seat of Scottsbluff County. Travellers use it as a bed base for Scottsbluff National Monument, 4 km west, and Wildcat Hills, 15 km south. Downtown is walkable in about 30 minutes end to end; a car covers everything else. One night is enough unless you are hiking or golfing.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable; numbered streets run east–west and lettered streets south–north, with addresses rising to the north and west. Tri-city Roadrunner buses run hourly on two routes — check the schedule before relying on them. Taxis must be phoned; you cannot hail one. A car is the default for the monument, Wildcat Hills and Scottsbluff.
